Spill The Wine

I had always admired Eric Burdon as a singer and performer, since his arrival on the scene as the lead singer of The Animals in the early 1960s. The band included Chas Chandler, and Alan Price, who both went on to have successful individual careers later. I had enjoyed the bluesey sound of the band, and Burdon’s gravelly vocals. They had huge hits with what were mainly cover versions, including ‘The House of The Rising Sun’, and ‘Paint It Black’.
By 1969, Burdon had left the band and departed for America where he still resides, now aged 73. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, he teamed up with a band of black musicians called ‘War’, and released albums of experimental funky music. I was entranced by this unusual sound, and bought them eagerly, lapping up their output.
This track is from the 1970 release, ‘Eric Burdon Declares War’. It was a little self-indulgent, and some tracks went on for too long. However, there was nothing to compare with it at the time, and Burdon’s English tones, backed by the west coast funk, have rarely been bettered.

  1. Pete, what a pleasure to hear these songs (“Spill the Wine” and “Low Rider”) again. I haven’t thought about these songs in decades, and yet they were immediately recognizable in every detail, as if I’d been suddenly transported back in time to my youth. These songs were very popular, and I listened to them often on the radio. Thank you for hitting the ignition switch on the musical time machine. I very much enjoyed the ride!

      1. thanks pete. sorry it took me a while to respond, i’m really ill this week. but i am trying to learn to do this blogging thing as well as i can as long as i have to spend all day on the couch anyway lol

          Blogging is a long process before you can feel comfortable with it, at least it was for me. It is like nothing else I have ever done, but I wouldn’t be without it now.

  3. The first song you posted felt a bit eclectic for me at the start, but oddly I found myself being drawn in and I wanting to listen and see where it went. I’ve heard lowrider before but had no idea who recorded it. Not really my cup of tea but definitely interesting. Thanks for sharing this Pete.

  8. Spill the wine has long been a favorite of mine. I remember walking home from school with my sister and listening to the radio we smuggled into school. Without fail, as we walked home Spill the wine would come on the radio and we would sing along and practically dance our way home.

    1. Thanks John, glad you like it. I haven’t watched ‘Boogie Nights’, but I did see ‘O Lucky Man’ on release, as well as ‘If’, ‘Clockwork Orange’, and most other films starring McDowell. I was around for both The Animals, and the Alan Price Set, from the time that they started out.
