Ollie goes to University

All photos can be enlarged by clicking on them.

As it was warm and sunny on Sunday, Julie suggested we take Ollie off to the grounds of the University of East Anglia, known by everyone here as the UEA. This well-respected university is just outside the city of Norwich, so only twenty minutes by car. Although it is a busy and active campus, it welcomes local people to venture in, to enjoy the spacious grounds, and the huge lake. (Called a ‘Broad’, in Norfolk) In the view shown above, you can see the modern buildings in their idyllic setting.

A path is provided for the circular walk around the lake, and there are many peaceful places to stop and rest, and to enjoy the views.

Many picnic tables and standing barbecues are arranged close to the lake, for the use of staff and students. On nice days like today, the grounds are well used by many people. Closer to the buildings, you can see the distinctive style of architecture, known as ‘Ziggurat’.

After a good long walk, Julie and Ollie took a rest. He stood still for a photo, for once!

If you are ever nearby, I recommend a visit. There is a large car park, and the flat fee of only £1 applies at weekends. There is also a shop, cafe, and other amenities.

  1. Thanks for sharing this for me, Pete. It looks as spectacular as I remember it, though the ‘Broad’ was only a work in progress when I was there. I think they benefited from a very wet spring to fill it up during my final year!

      1. It was anything but peaceful in my last term, as I was in Suffolk Terrace, the nearer of the ziggurats, and we had a lot of noisy excavations to endure! It turned out well, didn’t it. I went back there ten years ago for the university’s 50th anniversary celebrations and even with the large number there it was a lovely, quiet spot.

    1. Thanks, Pam. It is a nice place to visit, and to study at too, I bet.
Glad you like Ollie. He is not a pedigree Sharpei, but his father was. The only others around here are two more from the same litter. They are an expensive dog to own, with lots of medical issues. But we wouldn’t change him for anything.
      Best wishes, Pete.

  2. Lovely to see a pic of Ollie. I visited UEA once, many years back, for an interview (I eventually settled for Sussex, that was much closer to where I lived, although the external examiner for my PhD was one of the professors at UEA (Prof. Christopher Bigsby). It was a long time ago, and I had just had a car crash, so I had to go by train and it was an eternal trip (from Eastbourne). Perhaps I should return in better circumstances as it is a part of the UK I don’t know much about.
    Thanks, Pete.

    1. Compared to many of the university buildings in London, it’s a haven of peace, Robert. The architecture was controversial when it was built, but everyone is used to it now.
      Best wishes, Pete.

  3. Lovely to Julie with Ollie, such a nice couple together❣️:-)
Most of the times when I take the NE 727 from Norwich to London it drives via the campus and I love this area. The Sainsbury center is a gem and very nice for photography as well. (But probably not so good for dogs 🐾🐾 …) Very enjoyable reading, Pete!
    Love from Norway, Dina x
