I don’t scroll around on You Tube that much, to be honest. When researching for my Significant Songs posts, I recently came across this exceptionally clever short clip, with famous dancers and actors ‘performing’ to a modern song, ‘Uptown Funk’, by Bruno Mars. It is so well-edited, and contains a real feast of stars from the heyday of Hollywood. I couldn’t resist sharing it here.
Astaire and Rogers.
Moira Shearer.
Cyd Charisse.
Judy Garland.
Mickey Rooney.
Lucille Ball.
The Clark Brothers.
Shirley Temple.
Gene Kelly.
The Marx Brothers.
The Three Stooges.
Laurel and Hardy.
James Cagney.
Danny Kaye.
Rita Hayworth.
Donald O’Connor.
And many more…
See if you can spot the names I missed!
This is a real treat, believe me.
That leap in “Panama Hattie” at 4:52 was really something! Pete, I have at least a dozen of these films on DVD. Back in those days, “talent” was on a whole different level.

That’s a skilfully edited video with real verve to it. Nothing like the mix of Old Hollywood and something contempary. The juxtaposition works well.

I thought it was great, V. Seamlessly done, and full of fun.
Cheers, Pete.

I actually have this video on my desktop and if I get stuck in neutral for a while I will play and it is amazing how effective it is at unblocking mind and body.. great choice Pete.

Fabulous! I love those old movies and it’s very well done (I can’t resist if I ever catch one of these old movies on the telly, although they seem to show them a bit less often than before these days. I remember going to the gym at some point in the Christmas season a few years back and watching old musicals while on the treadmill. It was fabulous!)

I have also noticed that the old musicals are rarely on TV. That’s a great shame, in my opinion.

This got me grinning after the sobering read on gun violence on your other blog(well done). I think I spotted Gracie Allen of Burns and Allen.

Fabulous! I had so much fun watching. What energy and talent assembled. And the Mars song just blended the past to the present in a wonderful way. Great post, Pete.

This is fantastic. I’ve seen it before, but never with the movie titles added.

When I watch it, there are no titles! Must be an Australian bonus!

How remarkable that I see the titles, sort of like captions at the bottom of each scene, and you don’t.

I remember seeing this a while back. I love it! Those stars were from a time when you had to actually have talent, not just be a pretty face. Thanks for sharing that.

Pete, this is a great find. Bruno Mars is extremely talented, a modern sound with a classic “sinatra” style. This montage is a great way to celebrate both the old and the new!
