Significant Songs (146)

Somebody That I used To Know

Musical memories often include one-hit wonders. Those songs that you hear on the radio, or a video you catch on TV. You tend not to explore the work of the group further, rarely if ever buy the album, and they remain just a memory of a certain moment in time.

This is one of those, from Gotye, in 2011. Wouter De Backer is the heart of Gotye. An Australian born in Belgium, he is a songwriter and musician that I know very little about. But when he teamed up with the wonderful vocalist Kimbra, just a few years back, the haunting song got right inside me, and the accompanying video worked perfectly to express the mood.
Almost a perfect combination; but for me, just that once.

  1. This is an odd one for me as I first came across the song on youtube, but by a band called Walk off the Earth, I was really imppressed with them and the song, and didn’t know until later that the original was by Gotye when I heard it on the radio. I can’t help preferring the Walk off the Earth cover, I’ll share it for you to have a listen at.
