Ollie: A Dog’s Christmas

(Photo can be enlarged twice, by clicking on it)

Ollie doesn’t know it is December, and he certainly doesn’t know it is soon to be Christmas. However, he is aware of changes around the home. There is a big tree in one corner of the living room, surrounded by bags full of presents. Extra foodstuffs are being stockpiled, and I am sure he can detect the bags of crisps and savouries stashed in the spare bedroom.

Unlike the photo above, there is no snow at the moment, and rain is predicted for the 25th. But whatever the weather, it will be just another dog-walk for Ollie, round and round his favourite spots on Earth, Beetley Meadows, and Hoe Rough. He is currently unaware that he will have to be on his own for a while, when we go out to a restaurant to have our Christmas dinner that day. But that will be countered by him receiving some presents, like more of his favourite treats, and no doubt a new stuffed toy.

Then on the 26th, he will be overjoyed to welcome some ‘guests’, when everyone arrives here for a traditional family meal. There is nothing he enjoys more than having a house full of people to show his toys to, or to impress with his good behaviour. He will get more pats and strokes than usual, even if he won’t necessarily be able to lie undisturbed in his favourite spots that day.

So, for everyone of you who has a dog, don’t forget to let them join in any festive fun.

After all, it’s their Christmas too.

  1. Our dog especially likes giving presents to my husband and our grandchildren. A calendar of images of his brethren dogs for my husband. Dog socks for my granddaughter. A toy to chase for my grandson. Merry Christmas to you, Julie and Ollie.

  2. Merry Christmas, Ollie! 😀 I think it’s only right that you should be fully included in all the fun your two legged-companions may be having over these next few days! I wish your owner a very happy festive period as well, I’m sure you’ll both get lots of cuddles from the other!

    1. People often say that he looks sad, but it’s just his features being interpreted by humans. 🙂
I expect he will be worn out by all the visitors this week, but it makes a nice change from sitting next to me as I type on the blog!
      Best wishes, Pete.

    1. That grey colour is called ‘Blue’ by the breeders. Ollie had a grey brother in the litter. He got the colour of the distant chocolate Labrador in the mix somewhere. That’s why he’s not a ‘real’ Shar Pei. 🙂

    1. Thanks, John. We will do our best!
I hope that your family has a wonderful time too, and that you manage to get to some of those amazing restaurants for your Christmas meals. (After you have had that bacon-wrapped turkey of course…)
      Best wishes, Pete.

  3. I loved this post Pete and the picture of Ollie!😄🐶🐕 He is the cutest with his wrinkles! My dog is going to be excited with all the commotion and will be tearing up the wallpaper but she won’t be left alone for long. I always try to make a little snack for my furbabies or do something for them extra special on Christmas. I got her a sweater because she gets so cold and loved it but that night I guess boredom sank in because she chewed it!😣 Oh, the joys of being a pet owner!🐶🐱🐢

    1. We have never given Ollie a coat, as his fur keeps him warm. He has never torn up anything, let alone wallpaper, so we are lucky! He’s a very good boy…Ollie’s wrinkles are less than they once were, but I always think he is growing to look like me… 🙂 x
      Best wishes, Pete. x

  4. As with many breeds of dog, a Shar-Pei is sharp, eh? Ollie may be more aware of holiday goings-on than you imagine. In any event, I think it’s terrific that you are so very fond of him, that you see to his every need, and that you take him for walks in the most forbidding of weather. No pets around here, although the neighbor’s cat seems to have adopted our patio furniture (bye-bye pigeons!), and a hummingbird has been perching on a specific branch of our tree now for several months. (I would love to get a decent photo of the hummingbird, but my camera keeps focusing on the leaves behind it…)

  5. I had two really good dogs Pete. Maurice was poodle -but he acted like a person in a dog suit. Millie was a wire haired dachshund and sweet as could be. They always got presents for Christmas!

Best wishes for Christmas and 2018 from sunny Florida. It’s 80 degrees here though it is supposed to cool down for Christmas. Down to 72!

    🙂

    1. Thanks, Frank. Good memories of faithful dogs.
I’m not sure if I should envy those temperatures in Florida. It is relatively warm here for December, at 10 C. I doubt it would seem like Christmas, if it was 80 F!
Thanks for a great year of wonderful reading on your blog. Here’s to more, in 2018!
Best wishes to you all, Pete.

Ollie looks SOO adorable in the (little) snow❄️❣️❄️
We are so much looking forward to getting to know this outstandingly handsome and so very well behaving dog in the new year, Pete. 😊 And you and Julie too, of course. 😉 It’s a very special treat for us to have you as our virtual neighbours.
Wishing you and yours Happy Holidays and a fabulous New Year❣️🌿❤️🤶🎄🎅

    1. Thanks for your great comment, Dina. I know I keep saying it, but we must try to get together, in 2018. The last few years have been very difficult, as we have had family problems that are still ongoing. Once they are resolved, hopefully life will allow us some treasured time to get together.
Love from Beetley as always, Pete and Ollie. X

    1. Thanks, Michel. Ollie is my daily companion, from the moment I get out of bed, until I go to sleep at night, he is rarely away from my side. Even when he goes to sleep in the afternoon, he has to be next to me. I could hardly forget him!
      Best wishes, Pete.
