Lyrically evocative (2)

This is a more recent song that had me hooked when I heard the lyrics. Christina Aguilera is a powerhouse of a singer, belying her small frame. I have liked her voice ever since she hit the big time some years back, and this song took the combination of power ballad and lyrics to a new level, when it appeared on her album ‘Stripped’, in 2002.

Almost anyone anywhere on Earth can identify with the words and emotion in the song, ‘The Voice Within’.

Here are the lyrics.

Young girl, don’t cry
I’ll be right here when your world starts to fall
Young girl, it’s alright
Your tears will dry, you’ll soon be free to fly

When you’re safe inside your room you tend to dream
Of a place where nothing’s harder than it seems
No one ever wants or bothers to explain
Of the heartache life can bring and what it means

When there’s no one else
Look inside yourself
Like your oldest friend
Just trust the voice within
Then you’ll find the strength
That will guide your way
You’ll learn to begin
To trust the voice within

Young girl, don’t hide
You’ll never change if you just run away
Young girl, just hold tight
And soon you’re gonna see your brighter day

Now in a world where innocence is quickly claimed
It’s so hard to stand your ground when you’re so afraid
No one reaches out a hand for you to hold
When you’re lost outside look inside to your soul

When there’s no one else
Look inside yourself
Like your oldest friend
Just trust the voice within
Then you’ll find the strength
That will guide your way
You will learn to begin
To trust the voice within

Yeah…
Life is a journey
It can take you anywhere you choose to go
As long as you’re learning
You’ll find all you’ll ever need to know (be strong)
You’ll break it (hold on)
You’ll make it (be strong)
Just don’t forsake it because
(No one can tell you what you can’t do)
No one can stop you, you know that I’m talking to you

When there’s no one else
Look inside yourself
And like your oldest friend
Just trust the voice within
Then you’ll find the strength
That will guide your way
You will learn to begin
To trust the voice within

And here is Christina singing the song.

  1. Great post 🙂 She is a very talented singer. Did you ever hear that song of hers entitled “candy man” or at least I believe that is the name of the song. I heard that the music video was visually dazzling. I have heard the song, but I never saw the music video so one of these days I should look it up. Anyway, keep up the great work as always 🙂

  2. Nice message. Nice music. Lyrics unstructured, as is the case in most modern songs. I’m not really a fan of Christina Aguilera, but I do get a kick out of one of her videos: “Candyman,” in which she mixes old-fashioned wartime visuals (including multiples of herself) with some fairly modern and raunchy lyrics. It’s a rollicking video. She does a fine job acting and singing in “Burlesque” (2010), a so-so film that is kind of spoiled by Cher.

    1. Thanks, David. I have seen ‘Burlesque’, but I prefer to listen to Christina than watch her, to be honest. I have to be in the right mood to hear that level of power in a voice.
      Best wishes, Pete.
