Full Moon Over Beetley

At 22:10 last night, the full Moon was directly south-east of our house. As there are no street lights in Beetley, and little intrusive ambient light for miles around, the resulting photograph appears to have been taken in black and white.

It was so bright, our back garden was illuminated, as if by a floodlight. So I went out to the front driveway, to take some photos. The camera was hand-held, aperture f3.2, at the maximum zoom of the lens, 200 mm.

    1. Many villages have few or no street lights here. Michael, and Beetley is one that has none at all. There are also no lights on the two main roads that run either side of the village, so it is very dark. You cannot walk safely outside at night, unless you have a torch. But over three miles away in the town of Dereham they have street lights, and of course in cities like Norwich. But that is twenty miles east, so doesn’t affect our peaceful dark nights.
      Best wishes, Pete.

    1. The night sky here is truly fabulous at times. I have thought about buying a telescope, but it is usually very cold when the stars are at their best.
The photo here is not that good, but it did show the intense brightness, so worked for that. Your recent moon shot was much better. 🙂
      Best wishes, Pete.

      1. Thanks Pete. I’d get the telescope and a nice warm jacket to go with it! I had one years ago but it was kind of cheap and rickety. Even so, it did a good job of showing you the details of the moon and some of the brighter planets. Hmmm. Maybe I should get one! 🙂

  1. Very bright in my bedroom too as I have Velux windows and don’t bother with the blinds! I don’t take photos of the moon though as all you get is a bright white spot. I think you need a proper telescope with a camera attached to get a great moon shot. I was going to try and watch it rising, but forgot!

    1. I agree, Jude. This is not a very good photo, and was taken with my Sony RX 10 because it has the longer zoom. I just wanted to try to show how low and bright it was, The way it illuminated the street last night was quite startling.
      Best wishes, Pete. x

      1. I would dearly love to live in a place where there are no street lights or any other intrusive artificial lighting either. Sleep comes ever so much easier in places like that. I have been in a few of them out in the mountains and the canyons and desert places but where I live there is far too much civilization and artificial lighting and it’s glare blot out a lot of things … stars … the moon … good restful sleep. You are so fortunate to live in a place with no street lights.
