At 22:10 last night, the full Moon was directly south-east of our house. As there are no street lights in Beetley, and little intrusive ambient light for miles around, the resulting photograph appears to have been taken in black and white.
It was so bright, our back garden was illuminated, as if by a floodlight. So I went out to the front driveway, to take some photos. The camera was hand-held, aperture f3.2, at the maximum zoom of the lens, 200 mm.
Beautiful Pete.

Thanks, Robbie. I just wanted to show the brightness. It was really unusual that night

Thanks, John. As a Moon photo, it didn’t work at all. But I love the way the light seems to blaze off the screen, like a searchlight. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

Well done, Pete! You really don’t have any street lights in Beetley? Where did you end up? 😉
Norfolk is indeed docked like a small island east of Britain. Be careful not to push out to the sea with the next storm. 🙂 Michael

Many villages have few or no street lights here. Michael, and Beetley is one that has none at all. There are also no lights on the two main roads that run either side of the village, so it is very dark. You cannot walk safely outside at night, unless you have a torch. But over three miles away in the town of Dereham they have street lights, and of course in cities like Norwich. But that is twenty miles east, so doesn’t affect our peaceful dark nights.
Best wishes, Pete.

Yes, with this view, its really peaceful. Maybe i should give our officials the advice to switch off the street lights. I hope you are not angry with me, it was more a joke. Michael

Of course not. I got the joke. 🙂
Thanks Michael.

Thanks, Theo. It wasn’t a great photo, but it conveyed the vast illumination I think. 🙂

Nice photo Pete. I love to see the moon in all its glory! And how nice to live where there are no streetlights. You must enjoy a beautiful night sky (at least when it’s not raining!)

The night sky here is truly fabulous at times. I have thought about buying a telescope, but it is usually very cold when the stars are at their best.
The photo here is not that good, but it did show the intense brightness, so worked for that. Your recent moon shot was much better. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

Thanks Pete. I’d get the telescope and a nice warm jacket to go with it! I had one years ago but it was kind of cheap and rickety. Even so, it did a good job of showing you the details of the moon and some of the brighter planets. Hmmm. Maybe I should get one! 🙂

You could put it in your tiny caravan, and take it on your travels! 🙂

Having examined the photo closely, I suspect there’s something going on near Tycho Crater. Some kind of excavation, with a small domino-like structure in the middle of it…

I think this might be a reference to Star Trek, David, but I’m not sure. 🙂

OK, got it now. The ‘Tycho’ thing confused me, (didn’t remember that) but I should have got the ‘monolith’. 🙂

Many thanks, Marina. Not a great photo by any means, but it did show the intensity of the light.

I don’t know much about cinematography, but I think your garden, last night, would be a fillmmakers dream. Very cool, Pete.

Thanks, Pam. This shot was taken looking across to the nature reserve at Hoe Rough. They could have made a good horror film over there last night, that’s for sure. 🙂

Pleased to hear that, Mary. More clear and cold nights forecast down here, so we should see more of it. 🙂

I slept with curtains open which I never normally do, but it was lovely to go to sleep in the moonlight.

Going to have try and photograph it, I’ve had mixed results in the past.

If I had planned it, I might well have used a tripod, or some small support.

Very bright in my bedroom too as I have Velux windows and don’t bother with the blinds! I don’t take photos of the moon though as all you get is a bright white spot. I think you need a proper telescope with a camera attached to get a great moon shot. I was going to try and watch it rising, but forgot!

I agree, Jude. This is not a very good photo, and was taken with my Sony RX 10 because it has the longer zoom. I just wanted to try to show how low and bright it was, The way it illuminated the street last night was quite startling.
Best wishes, Pete. x

The picture looks great Pete. I pretty much slept through the whole full moon, so didn’t see it unfortunately😅

I would dearly love to live in a place where there are no street lights or any other intrusive artificial lighting either. Sleep comes ever so much easier in places like that. I have been in a few of them out in the mountains and the canyons and desert places but where I live there is far too much civilization and artificial lighting and it’s glare blot out a lot of things … stars … the moon … good restful sleep. You are so fortunate to live in a place with no street lights.

Thanks, John. It was one of the main reasons we picked Beetley as a place to live. After a lifetime in London, never seeing the night sky, it is the perfect place to get restful nights.
Best wishes, Pete.
