Too many candles

Today is my birthday. Regular readers will know that I always make a big deal about that. Previous birthdays have seen frequent trips to the seaside, or places of interest. I fear the weather is not going to cooperate today, so it will be a quieter celebration. I will restrict myself to opening my cards, and the few gifts I will receive.

Ollie thinks it is just another day of course. So his long walk will go ahead as usual, and he might be interested to sniff at my cards and parcels, hoping they contain unexpected treats for him.

We will go to the nearby Thai restaurant later. But it will just be a nice meal, nothing too celebratory.

And there will be no birthday cake.
I think that 67 candles is too many, for one cake.

  1. Happy belated birthday, Pete! Little O now blows out my candles and unwraps my presents for me. He also blows out any candles he spots as he’s decided that’s what candles are for. He is a nuisance to our local coffee shop.

            1. I like some of his shows, and his one-man stand up. I hate him in films, as he is too smug. The original version of ‘The Office’ was a masterpiece of pathos, but his short series ‘Derek’ was simply outstanding. If you ever get the chance to see it, I recommend it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derek_(TV_series)

I haven’t seen After Life, though it has been widely acclaimed. The uncut use of extreme swearing has also meant harsh criticism from some reviewers though.

        1. Take your time, I actually did a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Education which included prac but no I was never a teacher. I work in admin currently at QCT and was lucky enough to do these stories for their media arm.

          1. Have you thought of becoming a teacher? You are a fine human being and young boys need good role models.
Nevermind. That was a very motherly thing to say. You sound like you have a great life and I’m happy for you!

            1. I did think of becoming a teacher, back when I did my graduate diploma in secondary education including practicum and got my provisional registration. I thought about it and I didn’t do it. That was 13 years ago so I think that ship has sailed. But yes once upon a time I thought about it. I think you give me too much credit Cindy, being a teacher is hard work which is why I admire you so much. I don’t think of my life as great but one thing that is great about it and is my writing for which I’m very grateful. I think that’s where some of my energy is going now so we’ll see what happens. Either way thank you for the kind words, the continued support and your ideas.

  2. A belated Happy Birthday, dear Pete! Many happy returns!
Hope you had great day despite Gareth. It’s finally calmer in Cley now and the sun is out again. 🙏🏻😀

    1. Cheers Bobby. Did you get involved in those awful events in Christchurch mate? If you did, I feel for you, and understand. I looked for you on TV, but didn’t see you.
      All the best, Pete.

  3. Happy Birthday. You might consider multiple cakes to handle all the candles. Cakes come in a wide variety of flavors, you could have 67 different cakes and start the Beetleypet tradition of a cake for every candle!
Again, Happy Birthday, and warmest regards, Theo

    1. I got your lovely e-card, and it was very kind of you. I sent a reply, but was told your inbox was ‘full’, so the reply could not be sent..
It was very much appreciated, you can be sure. 🙂
      Best wishes, Pete.

  6. Happy 6 7, Pete! Wishing you many, many more. Finding your blog has been a real blessing. Back in the day, I used to celebrate my birthday all month; now it’s a day or two. Enjoy your day! Thanks for all you do.

    1. Ah, Mona. Like you, I once had the ‘birthday month’. Then that dropped to a ‘birthday week’, when I used to take time off work, and do something every day. Now I am retired, and every day is a ‘day off’, one day of celebration is enough. 🙂
Many thanks, and best wishes. Pete.

  7. A most happy birthday to you, Pete!
As to the candles: there’s a time in life when one should revert to having one candle only on their birthday cakes. 😀 Well, if you have a birthday cake, that is. I usually don’t. I do usually have a great dinner with my wife, though, and normally we spend a few days at the sea then. Enjoy your Thai food! Well, otherwise stay out of the wind. When I exchanged comments with Klausbernd in Cley in the last few days, I already got to know that it’s quite windy in your area. So, make sure you and Ollie don’t get blown away.
Again: a most happy birthday, and many many more,
    Pit

  9. You would think that I would remember by now, after following you for 4 or 5 years. 🙂
Happy Birthday Pete, enjoy the day and indeed the week, hell why not go the whole hog and make a year of it 🙂

  10. Have a lovely relaxing birthday Pete. A Thai meal sounds delish. We always went away to celebrate our birthdays, but in recent years that has become less important. Now we tend to have a day out and a good lunch. Here’s everything you need… 🎂🍷🎉💖
