A sense of panic

I woke up today with a strange feeling of panic pervading my mood. I was convinced that I had forgotten to do something, needed to do something urgently, or that something bad was about to happen. It has left a weird tension in my body, and my face feels flushed too.

I can’t ever remember this happening before, so like most unfamiliar things, I put it down to getting older. By nature I am a procrastinator, so never worry about not having done things, or anything on a ‘to-do’ list. But this feeling is nothing like that. It could be overwhelming, if I allowed it to be. So I am checking emails and writing on the blog, to force it from my mind.

It’s scary, I confess. In other circumstances, I might even be inclined to leave the house, off on a quest for the unknown thing that bothers me. I don’t really believe in prescience, psychic foreboding, or real visions of future events. However, I could be persuaded otherwise this morning, I know that.

Anyone else ever get this? I would dearly love to know what is causing it.

  1. Pete, it will be interesting to see if something sparks in the next week that was secretly nagging at you – since it doesn’t sound like anxiety – or it could be a “one and done” thing as well, let’s see!

  2. I have generalized anxiety and panic attacks so this happens to me frequently. In your case however Pete, since this hasn’t happened to you before and I’m assuming that nothing extremely stressful is happening in your life, I’d have to go along with the assumption that your anxiety was caused by a forgotten dream. If it happens again though, you should definitely go see a doctor.

  3. I often get a feeling that something is missing. Of course with the news today, we all should have panic, uneasy and foreboding attacks given the insane are in charge of our countries.
    Warmest regards, Theo
PS, I’m with FR, if it happens again you might want to check with your doctor.

  4. Sounds like a good old-fashioned panic attack. I would write it off to a temporary imbalance of hormones. I’m convinced men get manopause.
Big breaths and your distractions do help. Tell yourself it is a dark cloud that will pass along in a bit.

    1. Thanks, Cindy. On reflection, it was more like a sense of ‘impending doom’. But I have just had dinner, and it’s dark, so hopefully nothing will come of it. 🙂
      Best wishes, Pete. x

    1. Sorry to hear that you get this every day, Annabelle. I wouldn’t enjoy that. Funny thing is that other than walking my dog, I have no deadlines to meet.
Well, it has just got dark here, and nothing terrible has happened yet. Fingers crossed! 🙂
      Best wishes, Pete.

    1. We all have the ability to tap into intuition. Some people don’t believe in it and they block it out. Most times the reason people do that is because they are frightened of it. It can be both a good and bad thing. Even knowing or I should say feeling the bed can be good because it makes you aware and can keep you from being injured or worse. But I am certain that all is well. I don’t get any serious vibes when I think about you or read your messages. And a tarot card I pulled for you was very good. The wheel of fortune up right. So I think you are OK. Please excuse any typos it’s really time goes because I am dictating LO

  5. I get that feeling, too. Sometimes it is due to the weather. If it is a grey day I get depressed and when the sun comes out I’m happy. I’m usually fine if I complete two thirds of what I have planned for a day but sometimes I wake feeling there is something I have forgotten to do. It calms me to read my horoscope, even if it doesn’t seem to apply to me. It stops me feeling that everything that happens to me is my fault. This feeling of doom could easily be due to Brexit. We all feel so useless, incapable of influencing the result. We have lost trust in those who are supposed to be watching out for our wellbeing. The only way to fight it is to plan a good day and try to achieve it. If you can go to bed satisfied you shouldn’t have horrible dreams.best Wishes.

    1. That got to me at midday, on the news. Made me write a post on my other blog. This was hours earlier, Abbi. A sense of ‘impending doom’. Weird.
      Best wishes, Pete.

  6. Anyone close to you have a birthday soon? Maybe an appointment that you’ve made?
This is why I’ve started using a running “to do” list, so that I won’t have that feeling so often that I must be forgetting something important!

    1. It’s nothing like that, Becky. More a real sense of something bad about to happen, and no idea what that could be.
It feels a bit better since I have talked about it, and had a long walk in the sunshine with my dog. 🙂
Many thanks, and best wishes. Pete.

  7. I’ve had those, from time to time. Just a sense of foreboding. I hope you get to feeling better after that walk with Ollie.

I once saw a sign, ” I went to bed early, didn’t get much sleep, but I did get in several hours or worrying done”.

    1. I slept fine, Ron. It was when I woke up that the trouble started. 🙂
Yes, it was a sense of foreboding indeed. It hasn’t gone away, but it is not as bad as it was earlier.
      Best wishes, Pete.

  8. This happens to me on a daily basis… But, it’s usually work related. I woke up in a panic yesterday morning CONVINCED that I had forgotten to lock the front door of my place of work. I had to talk myself down from getting up and driving over to check.
Maybe you have some stress in your life at the moment that is manifesting in this panic. I feel like that’s usually where it comes from! Hope things are ok with you! 🤞❤️🍻

  9. Hey, Pete. Given your medical background I am sure you know there are some medical conditions associated with such feelings. Might be wise to just check in with your doctor. I am finding meditation helps clear my restless mind, but I know that is not what you are experiencing. Can’t hurt, right?

  10. i get anxiety attack once in a while, Pete. a fear (baseless) that something bad might happen. it is random and does not coincide with reality (thank God). it’s just fear or worry i guess. i shake it off my mind and move on.

  11. Did you check the iron? 🙂
I woke up this morning about 3 an remembered that I left the cordless drill outside on top of a compost pile, you event has reminded me of this, thank you 🙂

    1. I don’t need to iron most things these days, so it wasn’t that. 🙂
Might have been the remnants of a bad dream. At least I hope so. I hope the drill was still there?
      Best wishes, Pete.

      1. Aye, the pile can’t quite digest metal and plastic 🙂 I was more worried about rain that anything, or of course the local deer population could have swiped it to take down a few fences 🙂

  12. Sometimes I have this feelings of great panic when I wake up in the middle of the night. And sometimes it becomes so overwhelming and disturbing that I have to get up and take a psychotropic pill my family doctor prescribed me.

  13. By the time you read this you will probably have been out for your walk with Ollie so I hope the sense of unease has passed. I occasionally experience that kind of feeling but it rarely coincides with anything bad happening in my life.

      1. I have these types of things happen quite often.
Most of the time it is due to picking up on other’s energies, but occasionally I’ve had such feelings and they have pertained to me.
I’m sure all is well, but if you observe your surroundings with this in mind you might actually see the cause.
This is kind of strange, because I woke in the night feeling similarly.
Probably just the moon, it’s new.
        Be at ease my friend.
        All is well.

          1. It can indeed do strange things to us. Someone told me not long ago that was not so. I explained to them, that if the moon can affect the water in the oceans, lakes, etc. That, it can certainly affect the water in our body. We are 80% water, so therefore we are going to feel the gravitational pull of the moon. I hope by now you are enjoying your walk with your pup and having a wonderful day.

            1. I am back from the walk, Patty. It felt good to be out in the fresh air and sunshine, but I still have that weird feeling that something is going to happen. 🙂
              Best wishes, Pete.

              2. I’ll be doing a meditation later in honor of the new moon. I’ll use my seer stone when I do and do another tarot drawing.
                I’ll be thinking of you.
                Be well.

  14. They say that adrenaline somewhat blocks a person’s thinking process. To fix that, lay down in bed, get comfortable and relax – you just might remember what it is, or maybe get an epiphany to replace that feeling.

  15. I get that, infrequently but it happens. Usually a sense of something more than a panic. You are doing the right thing, moving forward. I would tell you how I deal with it but you have indicated occasionally you do not buy into spiritual aspects. It helps me though. Faith! (you didn’t forget to pay a bill…? something with the work you just had done on your house??)

    Liked by 1 person

    1. It’s not an unpaid bill, Edith. It feels like something more serious is going to happen. I don’t have any spiritual faith, but a long dog-walk with Ollie soon may help to shift it.
      Best wishes, Pete.

  16. I had a recurring dream once that made me believe on waking that I had to sit a final exam which I’d forgotten to prepare for. It’s daft as I was very systematic at exam time. Cognitively, I worked out it was something else bothering me, after all I hadn’t needed to take an exam for over fifteen years!

A few days ago, I slipped into a bit of a black dog about work and money. Nothing too serious but really unusual for me. But by the next day I’d come to my senses. The brain is a funny thing, often playing games. To our advantage or not, I don’t honestly know. I like to get to the bottom of these things, it’s best. 🙂

  17. Hi Pete, it sounds like you’ve had/ are having a panic attack, which can occur randomly for no apparent reason at all. You may never have another one, but if they happen frequently you’d need to see a doc. Best way through it is to do some deep breathing excercises, or better still get out for a walk, it’s a reasonably common thing, so don’t worry.

    1. I saw lots of panic attacks in the Ambulance Service, and it isn’t really like that. More a sense of unease inside my head, like I have missed something, or a bad thing is going to happen. Thanks for the advice, but it’s more mental than physical. Just weird! 🙂
      Best wishes, Pete.

  18. Hi Pete

Yes. I get that feeling fairly frequently. Sometimes it comes back to me before it’s too late, other times it doesn’t. It doesn’t always come back to me though.

I’ve got into the habit of putting anything important on a to do list on my phone with a reminder, which alleviates any stress as I’ll then know that the panic is about nothing important.

    1. Cheers, Ian. This feels weird, as it has never happened before. I sat thinking about it for a while, worried it might be related to dementia. Then I started typing, hoping to forget about it! 🙂
      Best wishes, Pete.
