Thinking Aloud On a Sunday

Time Alone.

My wife has gone off with her friend to see Ed Sheeran play live, in Ipswich. They will stop overnight in a hotel, after the open-air concert. So for around thirty hours, I will be home alone. Not strictly alone of course, as Ollie will be here.

He will be watching my every move, and making sure I don’t forget his dinner time, his walks, and his dog-biscuit treat. That also means a longer walk for Ollie in the afternoon, with no need to hurry back for any reason whatsoever.

Monday is a public holiday here, so the weekend is extended. The weather is seasonably hot; too hot to want to do any ‘work’ outside, that’s for sure.

So, what to do with that ‘time alone’?

Well for one thing, I can catch up on my foreign-language TV dramas that are recorded. I might watch a film on Netflix too, if only to justify having it. I could do those things when I am not alone of course, but I like to be considerate enough not to inflict my personal watching preferences on those who do not share them.

Perhaps I will make some of those long-promised phone calls to relatives or friends? Maybe write a real letter to someone, when I have the time to properly think about what to tell them.

Rather than cook a proper meal, I will just slide a pizza into the oven, after first ‘pudging it up’ with extra ingredients like garlic mushrooms, red onion, and black olives. Washing up will be minimal, and it will certainly fill me up.

Then there is blogging of course. I can give full attention to the blogs of those I follow, and perhaps develop some story ideas into drafts.

I could go to bed early, and carry on reading my book on the Kindle Fire. I am more than halfway through the big novel at the moment, and keen to see what happens.

Then there is the default option. One that seems more attractive, the longer I think about it.

None of the above.

  1. I quite enjoy time alone, though the OH and I do different things so we are not constantly together, but it is nice to not have to cook a meal, or think about mealtimes for once. Hope Julie enjoyed her concert and you enjoyed your ‘me’ time too πŸ™‚

  2. Great post πŸ™‚ With all that time alone, you could either post more blog entries, watch your favorite films, or as you mentioned earlier, take Ollie for longer walks πŸ™‚ As with anybody in that situation, what you want to do is up to you πŸ™‚ Hey that rhymes πŸ™‚ Anyway, keep up the great work as always πŸ™‚

  3. You have distinctly put down the humanness of us all. We have that list of what we should do and when push comes to shove, we do what we want — or in this case — nothing.
I think it’s healthy every now and then!

    1. In the end, I did a few things.
      Posted three blog posts.
Wrote three more up in draft.
      Took Ollie out.
Watched 4 episodes of a Danish TV drama.
      Had pizza for dinner.
Finished up by watching the film ‘Snowpiercer’. πŸ™‚
      (Review to follow)
But it was far too hot, so I went to bed early too. (11 pm)
      Best wishes, Pete. x

    1. It is called ‘August Bank Holiday’. Traditionally, the last Monday in the month.
Yes, blogging has taken up part of the day, along with taking Ollie out, surviving the heat, and emailing some friends. Not forgetting four episodes of a Danish TV drama.
I have just had that pizza, and it is now time to settle down with a film, in front of a very large fan!
      Best wishes, Pete.

      Taken Ollie for a walk.

      Sweltered in the heat. πŸ™‚
Next up is thinking about that pizza!
      Best wishes, Pete.

  4. I see you’ve been busy blogging and I’ve more posts to read after this. It’s hot here, too, today and I’ve been working in the museum, enviously watching people walk along the river eating ice creams in the sunshine! Hope Julie enjoyed the concert and took plenty of sunscreen with her.

    1. The concert started at 4 pm, and Ed Sheeran is not on stage until 8:30. Not sure about sunscreen, but she took some Prosecco! πŸ™‚
I have also written up three more posts in draft, and took Ollie out earlier of course, But after one hour, it was too hot for him today. (86 F)
      Thanks, Mary.
      Best wishes, Pete.

    1. Yes, three posts posted, and three written up as drafts.
I took Ollie out, but he was flattened by the heat, so we returned after just one hour. He was panting too hard for my planned ‘long walk’. He slept for two hours after that, and has just had his dinner. πŸ™‚
      Best wishes, Pete.

  5. Your line “considerate enough not to inflict my personal watching preferences on those who do not share them” is exactly what I do, Pete. My wife loves all kinds of cinema, but if she “misses” watching “Countess Perverse” or “Invasion Of The Bee Girls”, she is fine with it! Oh, I didn’t see the “beverage of choice” listed but I’m sure you have a plan for that as well…

  6. I’m hardly ever alone in my house since my husband and I run our business from our home. So when I am alone, it’s special. It feels very liberating. It’s the fleetingness of it that makes it so enjoyable. And for that, I’m thankful–even more so than for the privacy.

  7. I love my time alone, Pete. We spend so much quality time together that an occasional break is good for us. It is my chance to do whatever I please and sometimes what I please is not terribly exciting. I hope you enjoy your time apart. It makes the time together so much richer I think.

  8. It will be “fiercely hot” here today as well: 107Β° F / 42Β° C. So I’m going to leave shortly for a 6-mile (10 km) hike up in the Spring Mountains, where the high is forecast to be a relatively cool 79Β° F / 26Β° C.

As for being home alone, I would suggest cooking up ideas for serials would be a great use of time.

  9. My son and his family will be at the same concert, although they live only 25 miles away from Ipswich. I thank goodness I’m not sitting out there in this 30 degree heat. We went cycling this morning, but it’s too hot now.

    1. It’s been too hot here since just after 9. I expect my wife will suffer a great deal in the heat today.
But she does love Ed Sheeran, and Lewis Capaldi too. πŸ™‚
(She can sit somewhere shady while The Darkness are on stage…)
      Best wishes, Pete.

    1. I spent a few hours writing blog posts, then took Ollie for a walk after lunch. But it is a very sunny and hot 87 F here, and he had obviously had enough after one hour. πŸ™‚
      Thanks, Lauren.
      Best wishes, Pete.

    1. Thanks, chuq. Where pizzas are concerned, I usually buy a nice thin base with cheese and tomato only. Then I add everything else that I like to it. πŸ™‚
Forecast for 86 degrees here today, so not rushing around.
      Best wishes, Pete.

  10. Honestly I struggle every day with what to decide what to doπŸ€” I have so many hobbies, that it’s often hard to decide which one to pick to spent some time on. Today I decided would be a good day to play a boardgame, watch a couple of episodes of an anime, and read a book. But probably other things come up that make me change my mind and before I know it the day is over lolπŸ˜‚ Which I had an extended weekend, no make that week πŸ˜‚. Whatever you decide to do Pete, have fun! 😊

    1. Thanks, Michel. Monday is the last of the Public Holidays here now, until Christmas. They mean nothing to me of course, as I am on holiday every day! πŸ™‚
(Well, sort-of, as I am retired from work)
      Best wishes, Pete.

      1. Haha, yeah understandable!😊 The first Holiday that we have coming up is Christmas too actually, so it will be a while before we have extra time off. Luckily I have a three week vacation coming up in October, something I am looking forward to immensely! 😊
