This is for many of my recent new ‘followers’, and those of you who have left comments that need to be approved.

A link to your own blog is not a comment. I will Spam any such comment.
Ruthlessly.

A link to a website selling stuff is not a comment. I will Spam any such comment.
Ruthlessly.

A one word comment such as ‘Nice’, especially on a post about my mother dying, is not a comment.
I will Spam any such comment.
Ruthlessly.

A blog that is simply full of affiliate sales links is not a blog.
I will never follow you.

A blog that claims to be a cookery blog but is only selling through to products or utensils is not a blog. It is a sales website, and I assure you I will not follow it.
And if you comment on my blog, I will Spam that comment.
Ruthlessly.

A Gravatar image of an attractive man or woman with an irrelevant name will not make me follow a blog that is quite obviously a sales website.
So don’t bother to use those when you like posts, or follow my blog.

To everyone else who is obviously genuine, my sincere thanks.

    What really annoys me, is the volume content of the comments in the spam folder, with 100s of links to sales pages.

    1. Yes, the Spam folders are always full. But this is about those who get through to try to comment. As you say, they will probably never read my complaint anyway. 🙂

    1. This post is about those not in the spam folder already, Lara. The ones who leave a ‘comment’ of a link, or one word, hoping to get that onto one of my posts. I had two more this morning, both spammed by me instantly. 🙂

    1. Those drug ones are in the Spam folder, Elizabeth. The ones I am angry about get through as comments awaiting moderation. They come in ‘batches’, and this week they made me really fed up. 🙂

  7. Yep, yep, and yep. Just last week comments were submitted to my blog by someone who replied to the comments of others on a post published weeks previously. The comments made no sense, then he/she ended by recommending that people use vitamins. His/her blog sells vitamins. I spammed the comments.

    1. These are not from the Spam folder though. They pose as bloggers by leaving comments and likes. Sometimes, they really get to me, and make me furious.

  17. Hi Pete,
    I am a new blogger and a new follower of yours. This is good to know stuff. I don’t want to fall into any annoying pits. I do link stuff on my blog but I am not selling anything. I just want people to see things I use or where I found stuff. I am not sure if that falls into one of your “bad bloggers” list of things you shouldn’t do.

    1. Not at all. I link to some things that I recommend people buy because I have bought them, and they work well. Also to films and books that I review. But I make it clear that there is nothing in it for me. I am referring to people who leave comments like ‘Good’, on a 1500 word short story, or ‘Hello’ on a photo post about my dog. Those people are just trying to get me to look at their blog, which usually (almost always) sells something. Case in point two days ago, a Nigerian blogger trying to sell gold. His comment on my post was just a link to his website. Like I would ever be stupid enough to buy gold online from a Nigerian (or any other country’s) blogger.
      But if you have any ‘affiliate links’, you should always make that abundantly clear.

        1. Sorry. It is where you write about something, say a microwave oven, and then leave a link to Amazon, or the company that makes it. That link from your site will generate income for the blogger, every time someone buys from that link. Bloggers are supposed to state that it is an ‘affiliate link’. If I can be of any help with any aspect of blogging, feel free to email me. It is no trouble.

  19. I have been inundated with them too just lately Pete. Absolutely sickening. I too got a Comment on a post about my mother dying saying “nice.” Stupid idiots. Sorry you have had this too xx

      1. I can understand that! With a post like that, I feel bad even hitting the “like” button.. I hope people know that, if I do, I mean “I’m sorry, and I’m here for you”. Also, I’m sorry about your mom, Pete.
        I hope you and Ollie are doing ok in these lonely times of quarantine!! I try to check in when I can! So, hang in there!

        1. Thanks, Nicole. I understand ‘likes’ in that context, but whoever left that comment on the post about my Mum had clearly no idea of the content, and couldn’t care less about blogging.
          Life in lockdown is identical to life before, for me and Ollie. But my wife works for a doctor, so is still going in.
