Litter.

I woke up today thinking about Litter. Not just any average, everyday litter, but the mountains of rubbish (garbage) left behind recently in some beauty spots and city centres. Adding to the blatant disregard of public safety by not social distancing, the thoughtless morons who participated in the sun-seeking events or football celebrations also thought themselves to be above clearing up their own litter.

After almost 500,000 ignorant visitors descended on Bournemouth beach, they left behind them some 70 metric tonnes of rubbish. This included a great deal of plastic which might have been washed into the sea, as well as numerous cans and glass bottles posing a hazard to people and wildlife.

Someone also took this short video of the spoiled beach, early the next morning.

Liverpool Football Club celebrated winning the Premier League championship for the first time in thirty years. Against the advice of the city authorities, and the club itself, tens of thousands of hysterical fans took to the streets of the city to celebrate. Not only did they show complete disregard for social distancing, they managed to start a fire in the iconic Liver Building by firing rockets at it. Then when they finally went home, this is what the ignorant horde left in their wake.

An impromptu Gay Pride event was staged on Clapham Common, in London. Attended by over 500 people, it was said to be peaceful and good-natured.
Until they went home, and it was discovered what they had left behind on this popular recreational green space.

I am just beyond anger at this disgraceful behaviour. I don’t want to even be of the same nationality as the inconsiderate pigs doing things like this.

SHAME ON YOU! SHAME ON ALL OF YOU!

  4. It’s appalling. I’m happy to say the beach in Cley has been reasonably clean all through the heatwave, still we always come home with a bag of litter left by some pigs. It beats me why people can’t take their rubbish home with them. 😡🤬

It’s not only the British, just like cats, dogs, and skunks we humans have to mark our territory but we don’t do it with scat that’s a bit too far, we merely toss garbage everywhere then complain how no one else cleans up after themselves. I’m deeply involved with zero waste, if each of us picked up just three pieces of trash in the U.S. that would be nearly one billion pieces. It makes me wonder what all of those people’s views on Climate change and pollution are.

  7. It’s awful Pete. What is wrong with people? It’s as though they have forgotten about the impact this virus has, not only on people’s lives, but also the nurses and doctors who have to treat them. Forgotten heroes; how many were outside clapping only a week or so ago? There are going to be a lot of spikes in a couple of weeks time from all this madness. As for the litter, that is so disgusting. I have never seen anything like that, although whilst stopped at a traffic light yesterday I noticed that some ignoramus had chucked a carrier bag stuffed with takeaway cartons and cans onto the verge. Why? It was obviously in the car already so why on earth not take it home? I’m embarrassed to be part of the human race at the moment, never mind English.

  9. Not the Liver building! I’ve always been fascinated by it. People do things outside that they wouldn’t think of doing at home (well, some perhaps would, but most people wouldn’t dare). Don’t they realise public space belongs to all of us? We sometimes joke that they charge use for everything these days, but considering how much it costs to keep it clean and safe, I’m not surprised. It’s the same in most places (here I’m tired of seeing masks and gloves on the floor. No, the crisis hasn’t taught us anything, surprise, surprise!) but we have a saying here “Mal de muchos, consuelo de tontos.” Yes, you need to be a bit dumb to feel better just because something bad happens to many people and in many places. I’ve never understood why celebrating has to involved consuming large amounts of alcohol, getting drunk and leaving behind a huge mess. OK, I’ll stop my rant now. You’ve struck a chord, as you can see. Have a good week, and hopefully a peaceful one as well, Pete.

  17. I routinely police (pick up trash) on the stretch of highway where I capture sunset and sunrise. Passing cars seem to shed bottles, cans, and food wrappers. I think in geologic time our time on this planet will be marked by rocks created from trash. Warmest regards, Theo

  19. I agree I can’t understand how anybody can litter like that anywhere. I collect rubbish many times while running and walking. What’s shown on the pictures is too overwhelming to even start at for one person

  21. Well said, Pete….what happened to civilised behaviour? Just how difficult is it to clear up after yourself?? And the worst of it is, someone has to clean up, and you can bet they probably left masks and gloves, potentially with virus

    1. From what I could see, nobody had masks and gloves, and were not bothering with safe distances either. They are betond moronic, and unforgivable.

  23. I’m of the same mindset as you Pete. The great British public’s behaviour over the last few weeks has been absolutely disgusting. It’s doubly annoying for me because I’ve had to work through the pandemic, isolating myself when I get home, as well as caring for and worrying about elderly family members. It’s sickening to see people treating their furlough as a paid holiday, as they foul the beaches, parks and city centres. Your posts are a rare piece of sanity during this madness, thanks for sharing them.

    1. Thanks, Paul. My wife has worked throughout too, as a receptionist at our GP’s surgery. The reception staff have no PPE, and the minimum of safety measures implemented.

  24. Pete, very sad. We are ALL sick and tired of being quarantined – but guess what? Because he have done it half-heartedly here in the US< it's spreading life wildfire in dozens of states! Shocking, sad and sobering….

  25. Lack of personal responsibility. Lack of environmental concern. Lack of respect for others. I’ve always been one to condemn people who litter. When hiking, we pick up trash off or near the trail, and carry it back to the trailhead where the trash receptacles are located. I often see driver throwing trash out the window (cigarette butts, plastic cups, paper bags, etc.). And you’d be surprised what people throw into the Las Vegas Wash! It’s truly disgusting!

    1. I collect stray things left on Beetley Meadows and Hoe Rough. But these examples are on an industrial scale, and require money and resources to remove completely. I am ashamed to live on the same island as those people, David.

  28. I hate living in Bournemouth at times, we always get mad crowds, with other people needing to clean up the mess, it is just a piece of sand. I did go for a social drink with some friends, we made sure we had a bag for rubbish and left with the bag, it is simple, people just need to use common sense

    1. Our local people are very considerate too. But when others travel to the area, it’s a disgusting free for all. Especially with Macdonalds rubbish. I hate Macdonalds for that!

  35. I totally agree with you Pete. It makes my blood boil as well that now, after all our hard work of the last few weeks, the virus May start up again. We had kind of got it under control and there was hope. God only knows what this lot will have done. And the pictures of the beach were awful hubby said. I despair. And we are the laughing stock of other nations now too.

    1. I don’t get it, Rich. All those places had lots of rubbish bins for people to use, but they deliberately chose to strew it around. It’s as if they think that kind of ignorance sets them apart somehow. I even found a stack of empty beer bottles over on Hoe Rough, proving not even placid Beetley is immune.
