I have been posting a great deal of fiction during this ‘Virus Year’, as well as regular reports about the effects of Covid-19 in Beetley, and reblogging old posts for all the new followers.

So I thought I would go back to one of my favourite topics today, Blogging.

Regular readers will be clasping hands to foreheads, knowing that they are about to get a recap of my familiar moaning.
I say “Clasp away”, because that is exactly what is going to happen.

Remember when I said I would Spam anyone who left a link to their own blog as a supposed comment? Well it is still happening, and I am very happy to tell you that I have spammed no less than 22 bloggers who ignored my warning. Here it is again, in case you missed it.

A link to your own blog or blog post is NOT a comment, and never will be. If you do that on my blog, you WILL be Spammed!

What about the ‘Followers’ who do the same thing? They follow this blog, then immediately comment on any post by linking to their own.

Same deal! You WILL be Spammed!

Another pet hate. Inappropriate one or two-word comments on post that they obviously haven’t read. Case in point, a post about one person dying from Covid-19, and the terrible effect of that on his family and friends. The comment from some clown? ‘Nice Post’. (With a smiley face)

You guessed it. He was Spammed!

Another one? One of my best friends died of Covid-19 in May. I wrote a very sad post about his death, and how it had affected me.
The comment received? ‘Nice. Please check out my blog’.

Another twit Spammed!

Keep doing it, and I will keep Spamming you. Your choice.

  3. I have my comments set to ‘manually approve’ – stops a lot of that and easy to do from the app on the phone – approve/like and add to do list to ‘respond’ in timely fashion – 🙂 But then, I tend to fight ‘automation’ on many fronts, just to avoid the pain points – 🙂

    1. The people mentioned above all have to be approved by me, as they are new to this blog. That’s why the comments don’t appear on the posts, as I Spam them before they get there. 🙂

  4. Yes, providing a link to there blog is not a comment, they all just want to increase there traffic anyhow, that’s the reason they even don’t read the post and just randomly comment on it.

    1. Oh yes. I don’t expect anyone to comment, and as far as you are concerned, I know you are around, and often ‘feel’ your presence. 🙂
      The people referenced in this post know who they are, and they are just trying to sneak links to their own blogs by making irrelevant and sometimes offensive comments.

  6. How interesting? I don’t get a lot of comments like you do Pete and I’ve only been spammed a few times! It was annoying and took me a while to figure out how to block the person! You seem to get a lot of heartfelt and genuine comments. I’ve followed people from your comments! C

    1. Thanks, Cheryl. 99.9 % of my comments are most welcome, and the reason I have continued to be a blogger. I just need to get rid of the small number of annoying people who try to ‘sneak in’ their own blog references.

  9. “Clasp away.” That was good! I feel the same way, Pete. May I add one pet peeve to the list? Bloggers that immediately ‘like’ a post within seconds after it was posted. How can you like a post you haven’t even read?

  10. I’m thinking of starting a School for Spammers, teaching basic spelling, trying to improve their grammar and direct them as to what sites they should waste their time connecting, and more importantly whose sites they should avoid.
    I think this guy should sign up for the course:
    “Thank you for your nice post i really enjoy to visit this type of post.I feel very happy while im entering your post.Thank u for your nice post..”
    Just how do they feel when exiting my post?

    1. My theory is that they have some kind of ‘App’ that just makes the same comment on hundreds of random posts at the same time. If they do that enough, they get ‘spotted’ by WP, and put in Spam. Then there are those others who think that by asking you to read their blog you will automatically follow them. For some strange reason, a lot of new bloggers expect to make money out of blogging just by having a lot of followers! 🙂

  11. Well said Pete. I do notice sometimes someone makes a comment or just like the post it as soon as you post something just like within seconds… and i’ll be wondering have they read it or not…but I personally like to read it before making any comments.

    1. Yes, those ‘Instant’ likes often appear with three seconds of posting. A clear indication that the ‘Liker’ cannot possibly have read it.

  15. The “Like” button is sometimes at the least uncomfortable and at the worst an embarrassment when the blog (I’m speaking generally not addressing yours) is about a truly tragic event. I would like Word Press to initiate a “Read” button, I would like people to know I read the blog but understand not to like their catastrophic event; at times posts are so sad I have no words for a comment. I hope that makes sense.

    1. It does indeed make sense, Jaques. I have long worked on the theory that using the ‘like’ button for upsetting posts is acceptable. This is because I am not only liking the writing, rather than the event, but also showing the blogger that I have read the post.

    1. The ones I refer to are not ‘caught’ as Spam, as they appear to be genuine comments. They will be subject to moderation by me because they are all new people commenting, which is how they come to be Spammed by me, and not approved. I am just noting that they seem to be on the increase again. 🙂

  20. People did that on such posts??? Wow Pete that’s …infuriating. And yes I get what you mean as the links in comments or the just “nice review” etc are pet peeves of mine too. I’d rather they just like maybe ??? And I am really sorry for the loss of your friend.

    1. Sadly, Sophie, they do it on posts like those because they don’t read them. I did a post about my Mum dying slowly and painfully in hospital after a series of strokes.
      One idiot commented, ‘Love your content, please check out my blog’.

I agree — but speaking just for myself, it takes time to write a THOUGHTFUL comment, and when following many blogs, it simply isn’t possible to comment on as many posts as I’d like….so I click “Like” in lieu of leaving a one or two word generic comment. Occasionally, one of my followers will leave a “Great post” (or similar brief) comment, but if it’s a regular follower, it doesn’t bother me because I give him or her the benefit of accepting that they’re as pressed for time as I am.

    As for linking to my own blog, I rarely do that, and when I do, it’s to a specific post relevant to the topic at hand (which I explain).

    1. Thanks, MM. I have had followers for years who have NEVER left a comment, only a regular ‘like’. I don’t mind that, and I don’t expect people to write a ten line comment on every post I publish, as life is too short. But these people are not like that, as they are generally just seeking to publicize their own post or site, without really bothering to read what I have written.

  27. 😃 Pete, you actually spammed the spammer? Interesting!

    I have a “Commenting Policy” page on my blog; it lets visitors to my blog know what type of comments I expect from them.

    And, like you, I hate those generic comments.

    1. Thanks, Renard. Glad to hear that your policy works well for you my friend. 🙂 I no longer have any compunction about reporting these people as Spammers. It has gone on for too long.

    1. Perhaps some of that habit comes from other social media platforms, I am not sure. I consider it to be the height of rudeness, as well as lazy, and just plain bad manners. I don’t have to tolerate it, and I will not do so any longer. If enough people keep Spamming their comments, then those bloggers will not be around too long on WordPress. That suits me fine.

  30. I was really tempted to just write ‘nice post’ and leave a link to my blog in a kind of tongue in cheek homage to this post but I wasn’t sure what being spammed by you entails so I thought it wasn’t worth the risk…
