Quote: Oscar Wilde

The last post about Gil Scott-Heron’s quote made me think about my all-time favourite quote, from Oscar Wilde.

I read this in my early teens, and it resonated with me so much, I have remembered it my whole life. He didn’t actually say it in conversation, but he wrote it as a line in one of his plays, ‘Lady Windermere’s Fan’.

“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.”

  1. I only lie in the gutter during the day…but I’m happy to report that yesterday I saw stars!
Today, I have a huge welt on my head where I got struck by a 7-iron: “Get out of the gutter, you idiot! We’re trying to play golf here!

  2. I’ve read lots of Wilde this summer and find myself laughing out loud at the plays and stories. I did find a line buried in one of his stories or plays that stuck with me, but can’t which one. Nonetheless here it is: “Strange how little we know ourselves.”
