The last post about Gil Scott-Heron’s quote made me think about my all-time favourite quote, from Oscar Wilde.
I read this in my early teens, and it resonated with me so much, I have remembered it my whole life. He didn’t actually say it in conversation, but he wrote it as a line in one of his plays, ‘Lady Windermere’s Fan’.
“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.”
Absolutely brilliant quote.

I only lie in the gutter during the day…but I’m happy to report that yesterday I saw stars!
Today, I have a huge welt on my head where I got struck by a 7-iron: “Get out of the gutter, you idiot! We’re trying to play golf here!

I always wondered what Edgar Allan Poe was doing in the gutter.

Never knew that was an Oscar Wilde quotation. It was borrowed by The Pretenders for one of their songs.

I’ve read lots of Wilde this summer and find myself laughing out loud at the plays and stories. I did find a line buried in one of his stories or plays that stuck with me, but can’t which one. Nonetheless here it is: “Strange how little we know ourselves.”

Thanks for adding that, JV. I expect they could publish a whole book of Oscar’s great quotes and lines.

He was a great source of quotes, and devastatingly witty too. Such a shame his life turned out to be a real-life tragedy.

That features on a lot of WP blogs. It must be something generic that some bloggers leave on their sites.
Thanks, Stevie.
