As I know so many of you are concerned about Ollie, here is an update on his condition since we had the emergency with him in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The medication he was given makes him extra thirsty, and super-hungry.
He is drinking 4-5 bowls of water every day, as well as what he drinks from the river on his walks. And he is eating like he has never seen food. Anything we put in front of him is demolished in moments.
The breathing problems sadly continue, and are worse at night. After his much shorter than usual walks, he is panting heavily, but relaxes when we get home. However, as soon as it gets late and he is ready to sleep for the night, his breathing changes to hyperventilating, and is still very worrying.
So I have booked him to go back to see the Vet on Tuesday morning, as I want to find out why he doesn’t seem to be getting better.
I will let you know what happens on Tuesday, or if anything changes before then.
I’m reading in the wrong order and I’ve seen he’s slightly better, but I hope to check tomorrow again to get an update on the vet’s news. Take care, Pete and love to you both.

Fingers crossed for Ollie 🤞🏼 Has the vet checked his heart? My Shih Tzu has a heart murmur and his breathing was one of the first symptoms we noticed.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Thanks, Liz. Yes, she checked his heart and lungs, (with a stethescope) and said both were okay. But it was 3 am, and she was on her own there. Because he was just recovering from a skin infection, I suspect it was all too easy to suggest that it had caused a chest infection. He will see his own regular Vet on Tuesday, all being well
Best wishes, Pete.

I am so sorry that 8 is old for Ollie’s breed. We are all attached to him throughout the world as is evidenced by the outpouring of love and concern for him and for you and Julie. I would be in agony listening to that breathing.

Yes, it is distressing, but he has to finish the course of antibitotics, and I want him to see his own Vet next time. If he gets worse, I will of course take him in as an emergency.
Best wishes, Pete.

I’m wishing you and Ollie good luck. It’s hard to see any animal suffering. Dogs are always so brave when they are ill or hurting. I hope he’ll pull through.

Sorry to hear it. I hope they’re able to find out what’s wrong and can help him. I remember, before we lost Cinnamon, she developed breathing problems, couldn’t jump up on the couch, and toward the even trouble walking. The vet determined she had a large tumor on her abdomen. We ended up deciding to have her put to sleep. I hope Ollie’s diagnosis is better. Prayers for you and him.

Well-I thought the whole thing was skin related . .I suppose they have checked for diabetes-at least kidney function? I am so sorry. What a worry. Love to you Pete-and Ollie too. Michele

The emergency vet said it was related to his skin infection. When I go back on Tuesday, I will see about other tests, possibly x-rays and blood tests.

Almost sounds like panic attacks / anxiety. But he has little to be anxious about as nothing in his world has changed. Unless he’s upset about the new kitchen!

Yes, hyperventilating is a sign of panic attacks in humans. But I have never heard mention of it in dogs.
As for the new kitchen, that’s another story. The painter had a ‘domestic issue’, and had to leave it half done. Now scrabbling around to find another painter who can do the job in August!
Best wishes, Pete. x

Poor Ollie. Difficulty breathing makes it so hard on him I am sure. You are such good dog parents, I know he is in good hands. Holding positive thoughts for your visit to the vet. Sometimes an adjustment to the medication is all that is required. Get well, Ollie!

Oh, no! I hope the vet gets to the bottom of this! Heavy panting in dogs can be a sign of pain and not necessarily shortness of breath, do you have any pain meds that you can give him before Tuesday?
LikeLiked by 1 person
I don’t want to add anymore medication to what he’s already taking, Margie. He is on four tablets twice a day as it is. If he gets worse before then, I will take him back as an emergency.
Best wishes, Pete.

Thanks, FR. I wanted him to see the same Vet he normally sees, not anyone else. That’s why I took the Tuesday appointment. If he deteriorates before, I will use the emergency option again.

Some dogs can get anxious at night as they get older, which could make any breathing problems worse. Let’s hope the vet can come up with an answer.

Thanks, Annabelle. The Vet did say that some of this is age-related, and his ability to recover quickly is affected by age too. He is only 8, but that’s old for his breed.
