Well they finally got a weather forecast correct, and it is exceedingly hot today in Beetley. With no breeze, and fairly high humidity, it feels more like the tropics than eastern England. Despite sweltering in my office as I work on the blog posts, I am not complaining. Mainly because it isn’t raining. It is estimated to climb to a possible 36 C by 5 pm, which is over 96 F. It is hotter in Beetley today than in most foreign holiday destinations popular with British tourists.
I write a lot about the weather; mostly complaints, I know. Today, the media is joining me in my obsession, with regular TV news features about how hot it is, and likely to stay so for the coming weekend. The usual hordes of selfish inconsiderate idiots have hit the beaches all around the south coast of England, failing to bother with social distancing as they sunbathe and frolic in the sea. No doubt many will also suffer from sunstroke or serious sunburn, placing more strain on the overburdened health service.
I had to take Ollie out early today, but even at 9:30 it was already 26 C, and he spent most of his walk not walking at all, but standing up to his chin in the river.
Since we got back he has been sleeping soundly, as any excessive movement makes him begin to pant with the heat. I hope he manages okay tonight, as it is not set to drop below 24 C. No doubt I will be sleeping on top of the bed, with no covers.
I know, not a pretty sight…
It made me think of the offer from Barbados, to waive work visas for anyone who wanted to live and work there for six months, to take advantage of the good weather during the time they were working from home.
Perhaps Beetley should be advertising in Barbados instead?
You can say what you want, Pete! Ollie did it the right way. Lol

We are all very hot, Suzan. 91 F is unusual here, and we are not prepared for it. Ollie goes out early, and sleeps for most of the rest of the time.

Whether or not one believes in climate change seems to make no difference to reality. Things are getting hotter. There and here. Winter wetter and warmer too. As with covid, reality trumps wishful thinking.

Tropical and England do not go hand in hand. Pete, can you swim in the river to cool off? When it’s that hot no-one cares if you look a soggy mess. Others just might do the same. This summer has been ‘have fan will travel’, carting fans from room to room. We have hit 94 a number of days but not 96. And the press doesn’t help by going on and on about the heat. Sending you virtual wishes of cool breezes.

Thanks, Jennie. I don’t need to go in the river, and it is full of small kids and dogs anyway. 🙂
It ‘dropped’ to 27 C here yesterday, and felt relatively ‘cool’. 🙂
We have six more days of 30-32 to come before it stops, apparently.
Best wishes, Pete.

So good to see Ollie ❤ in the water, I hope he he had a good nights sleep, Pete. We didn't dare go to Cley beach yesterday. We did go there for our morning walk today and on the way we met many locals, totally livid with the tourists this year. (The tourist are different now due to Corona, more Yarmouthy, riffraff and Benidormish we were told. Hold on, I'm not familiar with riffraff; A group of disreputable people of low social position; the dregs of society.) There's no toilet on the beach but that didn't stop them/rr from relieving themselves right there and then all that litter. 🥺😢

Riff-raff is a good term to use for those kind of people, Dina. We even get some over at Beeltey Meadows now, leaving all their rubbish, including nappies.
Love from Beetley, Pete and Ollie. X

Hi we just experienced a tropical storm here in CT. We lost power for 4 days. We were already 7 people in a house built for four and a baby on it’s way in days. As a result we had to live outside and felt a bit like Little House on the Prairie.
We filled the kids swimming pool so we could bucket to the toilet. We boiled water for dishes – two tiny bits in two bowls with many paper towels. Lost hundreds of dollars worth of food in the freezers, sponge bathed and it was all in the 80’s and 90’s.
My children (two daughters and a son in law and two granddaughters) fled NYC because of the pandemic and a baby on the way, so they were attempting to run a major project for their company without internet connection. They had to sit outside at the town hall and conduct business.
We got power back today and are thankful for it. There were massive trees down across all our roads and power lines and we could not leave for half a day until they were cleared. No gas stations open and no super markets – we had to drive far to get drinking water. We are on a well and pump for our water. A few have generators but not us since even in a major snow storm we have never lost power for four days.
A big wake up call if the grid ever goes down. My daughters and their families will move to new houses outside of NYC in CT end of August and September, so we will reduce numbers, but I’ve been able to babysit for them so they can still run their company and several major projects virtually. Count ourselves lucky despite a lesson in frontier living skills.

Quite amazing that you were without power for so long in a country as industrialised as America, Felicity. It shows how much we rely on it, and how quickly life goes back to the nineteenth century without it.

I’m in Canada, and it has been hot as hell for a while now. We have also even getting a bit of rain aswell this summer, so it least not dry. Still, with an average of 30C it has been less then pleasant. I guess I cqn think of the one positive note. I’m trying to lose weight, so the excessive sweating is helping, lol.

Very hot weather does help with weight loss, as I am never as hungry when it’s very hot. But I ruin that by continuing to drink red wine, so counteract the good bit. 🙂

I’m so jealous! The sun battled to get through the clouds all day until about 3.30pm I rushed out to the garden and half an hour later, rushed back in as the cloud banked up again. Now, it’s raining. Sorry it’s so hot in your neck of the woods, Pete. In Nashville, we have been panting as well, but the last couple of days has brought us a much welcomed, howbeit temporary reprieve. Tis in the high eighties here in Cheshire, with the humidity of a racing-camel’s crotch after running the High Humidity Stakes. I LOATHE this weather. I’m too hot, the boat’s too hot, the laptop’s too hot – and there’s nothing (more) that I can do about any of it. People who think that this weather is somehow “lovely” ought to be drizzled with olive oil, sprinkled with black pepper and staked out on a beach somewhere.
Oh, hang on – they are. Ugh!

There is a breeze of sorts – but it’s hot… hotter than “not breeze”. Tis akin to being in some “fan oven” (given that I am not dissimilar to the Pilsbury Dough Boy this is more worrying than you might think). Trouble is, at heart I am a Pierson’s Puppeteer (Niven, Ring World etc) – and this weather actually seriously scares me!
