Block Editor/Classic/Options

Block Editor/Classic/Options

So I have been forced onto the dreaded BE. I naturally hate that, but this is my experience so far. For one thing, I had to choose ‘Edit’ to generate a title after publishing the post. And I cannot access categories and tags, even though they appeared the last time, but now choose not to do that.

On the left of the new post page, there is a big + sign. Click on that, and choose ‘Classic’. Then you get something sort-of resembling the beloved Old Editor.

Proceed as normal, and ignore any weird windows that pop up. Add your categories and tags as usual then save draft and publish. Except you may not be able to add categories and tags, but WordPress couldn’t care less about you, don’t forget that.

It’s not the ‘Classic Editor’, and of course I hate the faff. But we apparently have to live with it. Sometimes, the option to add tags and categories shows up like it used to. But on this occasion, it didn’t bother. WordPress can ‘do one’ as far as I am concerned.

Do I still hate and despise WordPress for doing this pointless change?

What do you think?

See you sometimes, or maybe not. I doubt I will be renewing my paid plan, if this crap is what I am supposed to tolerate.

Where have the Categories and Tags menus gone? They were here before. This is not supposed to be some Agatha Christie game, and I am already sick of it.

    1. I expect they will all make changes eventually, GP. They always want to attract more ‘business’ customers. If I get back to blogging, it will probably still be on here, but only if I can find a way to keep it very simple. If we can’t enjoy being bloggers, then what’s the point?
      Best wishes, Pete.

      1. Blogger (owned by Google) just updated their blogging format – and HELL, it takes more learning but it is not as hard as WP. Their rates are $12 per year for the domain name and it’s working for me, so far. I agree Pete – what is the point of blogging if it’s complicated to format a dang post.

        1. I am reluctant to try to learn Blogger in the same way as I don’t want to learn WP Blocks. I have found some ways back into the Old Editor that seem to work for now. After 2023, that will be phased out, and then I will decide what to do.
          Best wishes, Pete.

    1. The film review post worked fine like that. Then I started another post, and everything had changed. I came out of that to try again, and that screen was completely different to the other two. I don’t have enough ‘tech energy’ to play around like that, and I want my hobby to be fun, not a chore.
      Thanks, Stevie.
      Best wishes, Pete.

  1. It’s tech people. They have to ‘improve’ things but to do so they have to complicate them and add extra things for us to do we didn’t have to do before. On my last post, the whole thing was published before I added categories, tags and I hadn’t put in captions. I was going to hit edit and try to add them but I couldn’t face what would undoubtedly be a hassle. That said, I have found if I simply paste in my text, it works OK on the whole.

    1. Actually, there’s a safeguard now in the Gutenberg editor against accidentally publish too early: when you hit “publish” yjhe first time, it asks you – with hints – if you really have done everything you need and if you want to go on with publishing. And only when you hit “publish” again, that is done. I’ve never found that in the old editor, and many is the times that I gave accidentally published something unfinished.

  2. I’m sorry to hear you are having trouble with the editor Pete😒 I just checked just to make sure that nothing changed, but as soon as I push the option write, I get a big side bar to the right of my screen where I can add tags, categories and everything else. There are two options in that sidebar (underneath the publish button) post and block. If you have the option block you can’t add tags, but if you put it on post, you can add tags as normal. Just type in the tag you want, and press the enter key. Then that word appears as a tag. If you want I can sent you a couple of screenshots with email. As you know Pete, I am a noob when it comes to technology as well. And while I have struggled with the editor myself in the beginning I have managed to make it work pretty good now. I really want to help you, as I would hate to lose your blogging presence because of this.

    1. Thanks, Michel.
I don’t think I want to play in their playground anymore. Every time I start a post, I have to reset to the options I want. I am paying them my money to be messed around by those idiots. Enough is enough my friend.
      Best wishes, Pete.

  3. I was contacted by a sight impaired friend who couldn’t use the Block Editor, because his software couldn’t β€˜see’ it’s way around to enable him to draft his post.
I did some research and published a blog post about it today, but the easiest solution that worked for him was to use this link in his browser, then save it as a favourite, so he can go straight to adding new posts in Classic Editor:

    1. Chris, I really appreciate your help. But I am just sick of tech my friend. It is all so f*****g unnecessary. They are just pissing around with the real bloggers, and they really could not care less about us. I am at the end of it all now. It might be a positive thing to just walk away. Because we all know they will just change it again, and then I have to learn again. Forever.
      Best wishes, Pete.

            1. I’m with you! Just turned 73, and even though I don’t post daily I’m not ready to sit in front of the television, alternatively watching and being watched. At least, I FEEL like I’m “doing something”! Mona

    1. Maggie, I cannot find that by going through Admin, and I am well past caring about completely pointless tech changes. This could well be my farewell. A life without Tech might be a happier one.
      Best wishes, Pete.

      1. Wpadmin / Posts /All posts / at the top of the screen there is a add new button with a drop down list where you can still select classic editor. Fraggle’s video also shows you how to do this. And you need the post option on the right to use tags etc if you do find yourself in the classic editor. It’s annoying that they force this change, but it’s really not that bad if you keep it simple.

          1. Pete, don’t let them get you down. Take some time out by all means, but you have been part of my blogging friends for a very long time and many others. We would miss your wonderful sense of humour, your grumbles about every day things and especially your serials. Seriously look at Fraggle’s videos. It’s not too hard to use the basics, and most of your posts are written. It’s annoying, a pain in the arse and unnecessary. But don’t let the idiots win.

      2. Pete, I would truly hate to see that. Once you set-up a bookmark for WP-ADMIN it really is quite simple to stay with the familiar editor. I am happy to help in any way I can, Pete.
