After posting about my farewells from WordPress, I received two very easy tips that so far allow me to access the old editor.
Here they are, in case they help anyone else.
1) Enter this in your browser, substituting the name the name of your blog.
https://beetleypete.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.php?classic-editor
It will take you to the old-style editor where you can create a post.
Then bookmark that page for future use.
2) This was sent to me by Michel.
(Click on the photos for large print)
Go to the wordpress admin page and select all posts:
Once there, go the top of your screen and press the arrow next to add new and you will see that you get the option to access the classic editor:
Once you have selected the classic editor, it’s business as usual.
I hope these help somone else. If they carry on working for me, I will be back to blogging soon!
Never too late to learn something new or rather something old. 😉
Just returned to my blog after a leave of 4 years and had a rude awakening. I can see a wee advantage to the block style. And if you are a new blogger and don’t know any better ….. go for it.
A satisfied customer referred me to your blog. 🙂

I still don’t like it, but I appreciate the new bloggers have never known the easier version. For now at least, I am still using the Old Editor, accessed through the admin menu.
Welcome back to blogging.
Best wishes, Pete.

Du Malone writes: If, like me, you’ve been struggling (to the point of exasperation) with WordPress’s new editor function, various people have found workarounds. I’m reblogging this post because it links to one of them. Quite why it is that we need to befinding workarounds for a supposed improvement bemuses me. I’m coming to the view that the best long-term solution will be to avoid WordPress.

Hi Pete
Just spent a rainy Sunday morning trying to write a test post in Block Editor, comprising a drop cap, quotes and links. Bearing in mind that I’ve been coding since 1982 (I was a typesetter before becoming a cabbie) and having help from the wpbeginner.com guide, three hours later I’ve given up with a headache.
Taking your tip to access the ‘old’ editor I wrote the post in 3 minutes.
Apparently WordPress are supporting the old editor until 2022, at least that gives us time.
The new WordPress block editor claims to offer a simple way to add different types of content to your posts and pages, I beg to differ.

Glad the tip helped, David. People are definitely divided about the BE. Some bloggers seem to love it, and think it’s a great improvement. They must be so much more intelligent that me!
Best wishes, Pete.

I looked at a few plugins yesterday, but whilst most used to be free they now seem to require a premium account, maybe an indication of how the business model of WordPress is changing.
I hope this solution continues to work for you 🙂

Yes, they told me to upgrade to a Business Plan at £240 a year and I could keep the Classic option if I paid. Bastards!

A lot of people are having trouble with this. Great idea to add these tips to your blog Pete. I struggled with the idea of the block editor to begin with but soon found that it was not quite as difficult as I thought it would be. Like anything new it needs time, and patience to master new skills. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

Hey Pete, I’m glad this helped keep you around for a while longer! I also use this Admin page to create all my posts. As you know I switched to the block editor but I still create them here. I also retrieve and edit older posts using the classic editor (yes, believe or not, I do that.) So I guess I’m bilingual in wordpress! 😉

I got the Admin page route working once yesterday, then after that it wouldn’t play. These methods do seem to work consistently though. (So far)

Thanks, Pete, for that “link” to the old editor. It works fine for me for my “Bilderbuch Blog”, as this is on WP.com directly. But it doesn;t work for my “Pit’s Fritztown News” because, unfortunately, that was moved to a subdomain.
But anyway: as you know, I’m quite content with Gutenberg [plus, sometime, the “classic” as a block within Gutenberg].

Oh, good – hope it works for you. I prepared my post using block editor and then it refused to publish. I called Jon who was muttering a lot as he searched for the reason then he suddenly noticed the post had been published. Last time it published before I was ready, this time it refused to publish then went ahead and did it anyway. Good luck.

Well WP have put that option in, but it will probably go away eventually, but they have said they’ll support it until 2023. Fingers crossed 🤞. And take some time out to recover from your illness, you have been under a lot of pressure lately, and stressing over this isn’t helping.
