As most of you will know by now, I rarely have anything good to say about WordPress. Whether it is the fact that they will not be retaining the Classic Editor soon, or the endless glitches that fling our comments into Spam Folders, the host company of our blogs has received the sharp end of my keyboard on more occasions than I care to remember.
However, credit where it’s due.
This morning, I received conflicting communications about the renewal of my paid ‘Personal Plan’. One message said I had to renew it, and another told me it had been automatically renewed, supplying me with a confirmation invoice number to prove that.
So I used the ‘Live Chat’ system to query the confusion.
They replied instantly. I typed out my question, and received a reply resolving the issue in less than sixty seconds. I know this is not available to anyone who uses the Free Option. But at £3 a month, it has to be worth it. And it gets rid of the advertisements too. Some people pay that much every day for a takeaway coffee.
Compare that to so many years of teeth-grinding frustration trying to contact WP through the help pages and forums.
WordPress support has always been helpful to me. I am not very”techy,” so this is deeply appreciated. I have had a website for five years but added the blog a year ago at the start of the pandemic. I have found the WordPress community to be very kind and supportive. ❤

I prefer the self hosting route, although my blog remains on free WP, I don’t know why I haven’t moved it yet, I should if only to get rid of the adverts. Hosting would only cost about £5 a month for a single site, worth considering if you need to tighten your belt.

I had a self-hosted site which was becoming more expensive to run, and having to resolve issues on my own was becoming more complicated. When after being hacked twice I migrated to WordPress. They helped move over 2,000 posts and images within days. They were great.
I have a new problem though, which I can’t resolve, my third party feeds – Twitter etc – are not showing on some, but not all browsers. Any ideas on a postcard would be appreciated!

Have you got all the boxes in place on your settings?
Admin>
Settings>
General>
Sharing Settings>
Publicize>
Sharing Buttons.
Drag and drop those you want into the box below. Then don’t forget to ‘Save’.
If you have already done this, then I have no idea!

Thanks for the recommendation – it isn’t much, but I’ve had occasions when I would have appreciated the service, and an hour of a consultant would be far more than a year of fees.

From WP point of view I would imagine they are losing money on a blog likes yours where the ads are seen by so many readers.
Here it costs $4.00 a month, not a lot; but every time I turn around some one is asking for a small monthly fee that adds up with all the rest.
For now, I will continue to spend the monthly fee on Brit Box that wonderful channel that streams great UK past TV shows.

I have had nothing but issues with WP for many years. Not least the Block Editor, but also Spamming my comments and changing the notification bar. So it was only fair to note that they had done something good for a change.

I agree Pete. I like the paid plan for the 3 reasons you mention – no advertising, extra media storage and quick access to a happiness engineer! They respond instantly via chat. Last time I reported an issue, it turned out it really was a bug, and they rolled out a fix soon thereafter. I was impressed!

Considering the nature of my WordPress site, and the rarity of my posts, I go with the free version. I never did read up on how to avoid block editor, but found out how to go classic with a quick look at the admin page.

I have 2 paid ones and a free one and consider it money well spent. I’ve used the chat service a couple of times and they’ve always been fast and helpful.

I went paid personal plan on two of my blogs as I was finding the adverts on other blogs so intrusive – for instance on Sue’s blog they appear all over the place, in between photos etc. and often not the most pleasant adverts. I was horrified to think what could be appearing on my blogs (as when you are logged in you don’t see them on your own posts). As you say a small price to pay when blogging is your only hobby.

Just £3 a month, which I don’t think is a lot for my main hobby, and everything I get out of blogging. I do pay extra for the dot-com name, (£15) but that isn’t compulsory. You do have to pay the whole year (£36) in advance though.
