Holidays At Home

The pandemic is still going to affect foreign travel, so it is a brave soul indeed who is prepared to book a holiday in some exotic location for 2021.

With much of the UK now in the same lockdown situation, holidaying in Britain might be the only option for many people used to seeking sun and excitement in foreign countries.

Fortunately, our own country does offer many places to enjoy, despite the unreliable weather.

But where to go?

I found this article online that has lots of suggestions. I have visited quite a few of the locations mentioned, but also discovered some I didn’t know about.

It does have some sponsored links, but they will be helpful on this occasion, so you can find out more.
(I get nothing for recommending this article, just so you know.)

  1. Those are some really good recommendations. It’s so easy to overlook gems on our own doorstep isn’t it. We had a lot of UK holidays when I was younger because my parents had dogs, and we had some really enjoyable experiences: North Devon, Lake District, North Wales, Hampshire, Norfolk, the Derbyshire Dales etc.
Northumberland and the Scottish Borders often get overlooked, but the countryside is beautiful.

    1. I have had some nice breaks in Northumberland in the past, and agree it is a wonderful area. We haven’t holidayed abroad since getting a dog in 2012. I won’t leave him in kennels, so we holiday in Britain, and take him with us.
      Best wishes, Pete.

  2. I’m glad they have put Happisburgh on the list, Pete. We had the worst summer tourist-wise last year with so many Brits holidaying here. We hardly left the house or the garden, it was impossible to keep up social distancing on the lanes here. We also had lots of holidaymakers during Tier4, but Tier5 stopped it. Best wishes, Dina x

  3. Having Europe on our doorstep we have endless choice, except for the fact that we have lots of animals, small children and a business to run, so we will wait 🙂
Alderney is a great place, the pace of life is most definitely 33rpm, I would have happily relocated there when I lived in Jersey if I could have found work there. I stayed in Fort Clonque for a weekend once, it was a magical place https://www.landmarktrust.org.uk/search-and-book/properties/fort-clonque-7423/#Overview . But the best of the Islands is Sark, no cars, so 5mph is the default 🙂

          1. There are some real stunners, I also stayed in one in Jersey but the name escapes me at the moment, I remember that the waiting lists are always long, but if you are agile and are willing to fill in for cancellations then the rewards are worth it 🙂

  4. I keep dabbling with booking holidays for Easter just to avoid exorbitant packages later on in the year. There is talk of mass vaccinations in Q1, we might return to holidaying abroad soon. I am looking forward to some UK breaks, I just find it so expensive though.

    1. It is annoying that five days away in Lincolnshire last year cost us as much as ten days in a hotel in Spain. But I am not willing to chance losing the money on a foreign holiday, or being stranded if quarantine rules change.
      Best wishes, Pete.

      1. I know exactly what you mean! Heard the travel guy yesterday say stick to Package holidays and I note many companies are offering a rebooking guarantee…I must look into that.

We stayed at a Manor house in Lincolnshire 4yrs ago for my father’s 70th – we had a thoroughly brilliant time.

Good luck securing a break this year

        1. I have already booked the same place in Lincolnshire, for a week in September. We liked the place, and can take our dog. Plus we don’t have to pay anything up front, and there is no penalty if we have to cancel due to the virus. 🙂

  5. Pete, my wife and I are currently formulating plans both near and far, and based on how quickly we can overcome this horrible pandemic, we will either see the world in 2021 – or see our local neighborhood!

    1. If we could only guarantee good weather, Britain would be the ideal place for a holiday, Cheryl. That said, last summer was hotter here than many continental resorts. If you manage to get to England while I am still alive, I will happily show you around. 🙂
      Best wishes, Pete.

  6. My family arrived home a few hours ago from our holiday in KwaZulu Natal. We went to a game lodge called Fugitives’ Drift Lodge which is renowned for its battlefield tours to all the 1879 Anglo-Zulu War battle sites. There were two families from the UK at the lodge and I had discussions with them both. It was amusing to me that they come to South Africa to enjoy nature and the wildlife, something I have all the time and am used to [and thus not as appreciative of as they are]. On the other hand, they are not fascinated by the castles, mansions, battlefields and other historical places in your country which I love, love, love. I harbour a secret hope we will get to Glastonbury this year, but I’m not holding my breath. In the meantime, we will enjoy the wildlife, nature and sunshine here.

    1. I travelled to Kenya and Tanzania to see wildlife in huge numbers, in its natural habitat. But I am equally fascinated by the history of my own country, and other European countries. The people you met should appreciate both, as each has its place.
(Given the current situation with the pandemic, I am surpriosed they had travelled so far.)
      Best wishes, Pete.

      1. I agree, Pete. I have also been to Botswana, Zimbabwe [not recently] and Namibia as well as all over South Africa to look at nature and the wild. I also appreciate and love both. These people are likely to be trapped here but they know they took this risk in coming. I would not have travelled so far now.

  7. I’ve been to many of these places, even the IOM as a very young child. I’d like to have a week in Wells to explore that area and a couple or three weeks in Yorkshire if at all possible. I can’t see us going abroad this year, if ever again. We’d like to see more of Scotland and even Ireland.

    1. I have never been to the Isle Of Man, or The Channel Islands. I have done a fair bit of Scotland and Wales over the years, as well as most of Cornwall. I have been to Belfast and Limerick, neither of which I would recommend. 🙂
      Best wishes, Pete. x

In my experience, it is worse in July/August, and late afternoon, close to sunset. And in the glens. I was once bitten so badly at Braemar, that we stopped counting at over 100 bites, and I had to stay inside for the rest of the week we were there. There are literally clouds of them, and they are determined and aggressive. x

        1. Absolutely! We did the outher Hebrides and The NC 500 a few years ago and I would gladly travel the same route again (apart from Loch Ness) and see more of the Hebrides. Have you been to the Cairngorms?

  8. So many places in Britain I still haven’t been and nearly all our holidays have been in Britain! Saint Ives and Whitby I can tick off and they are well worth it. I presume we are not meant to go anywhere while we’re in lockdown.

    1. That’s the rule at the moment, Janet. These suggestions are for later in the year, when we might be able to take a holiday, but probably won’t want to risk going abroad and being stranded.
      Best wishes, Pete.
