About the Author: Candy Keane is a former professional costumier and cosplayer, turned author and blogger. For over a decade she made custom costumes for cosplay, TV and movies in her Three Muses Inspired Clothing boutique. After the birth of her son in 2015, she decided to close her store to concentrate on family and writing projects. She now writes about “geek mom life” on her blog GeekMamas.com. Her first children’s book, I’m Going to My First Comic Convention, was inspired by her son and her experiences at comic cons across the nation.

About the Illustrator: Katherine Margaritis is a Jacksonville native and self-taught artist who draws her inspirations from her favorite animations and games from her childhood. Because of her nerd-centric themes, Katherine has been a contributing artist with GAAM (gaamshow.com) since 2013 where her art has been auctioned off yearly to help raise money for local charities. This is Katherine’s fourth illustrated children’s book and she hopes to create more in the future.


Brief synopsis: Many comic cons have been cancelled this year, but you can still share the experience with your child with the children’s picture book, I’m Going to My First Comic Convention! The book tells the story of a little boy excited to attend his first comic con, and imagining all the things he might see and do at the convention. Two Geeky Moms Share the Magic of Comic Con in New Children’s Book

Going to a pop-culture convention is an exciting adventure, and the new children’s picture book I’m Going to My First Comic Convention aims to give kids and parents a peek into the world of comic cons from a child’s perspective. The book tells the story of a little boy waking up excited to attend his first convention, and imagining all the fun things he might see and do. From cosplay, to panels, to meeting celebrities, there’s more to comic cons than just comics!

Author and well-known cosplayer Candy Keane wrote the story after finding there wasn’t a book to show her son what to expect at a pop-culture convention. He had books on visiting zoos, airports and museums, but there was a lack of information on nerdy endeavors like cosplay, gaming and cons. Knowing she needed an illustrator that had actually seen and done the things in the book, she teamed up with local artist Katherine Margaritis and together they created a book that shares the magic and excitement of a world where you can meet (or be!) your favorite superheroes.

  3. I can speak from experience (31 years of teaching elementary school) that these are the type of books that many kids are most attracted to.

  7. Living in Las Vegas, I’m not too terribly far (by American standards: 330 miles / 534 km) from San Diego, where the annual Comic-Con is held. I’ve been close to San Diego before (Oceanside), but,I’ve yet to visit the city famous for many things (including the weather). I’ve never been to any kind of cosplay event, though I’ve seen many actors (Las Vegas Strip, Hollywood Boulevard, Universal Studios) dressed up as comic book heroes. Anyway, maybe one day, I’ll get an opportunity to attend the convention in San Diego. It would be a lot of fun!

    2. If you are going to choose one to go to, San Diego Comic Con the THE one to check out! It’s a fun time. Fun fact: The book was supposed to be called “I’m Going to My First Comic Con” until I found out SDCC had copyrighted the term “comic con” so to be safe we went with the full word.
