They never seem to get that close here, but I often have them messing with my poor eyesight as I walk about at dusk in the warmer months 🙂

Into the evening bats appear here too. At first I mistook them for swallows which also frequent our yard, but finally realized that they were indeed bats. They do love the mosquitos.

Our little bats feel like my friends. I look forward to them arriving every year.
They fly in a different way to birds, so are easy to tell apart.

Wow! I’ve not experienced bats up close and personal like you but I do enjoy seeing them from my office window at dusk. We went to Carlsbad Canyon once and waited for them to exit the canyon in search of food around sunset. Unfortunately rain and threats of lightning sent us all scurrying back to our lodging!

When I lived in Michigan on Coe Road in Isabella County, I had a security light on a utility pole that attracted bugs; and, the bats were omnipresent around that light which must have been like an “Open Free Dine” sign for them. Warmest regards, Theo

As a child I was afraid of them, but over the years my attitude has changed.

They are mostly harmless, though their droppings can affect respiration in very high concentration.
The tiny ones in Beetley are very cute! 🙂

Oooh, I need to get to Beetley! I have rarely experienced bats since I was a teenager, and used to sit out in the garden in the evening to see them

When it is warm, they start to appear after sunset. Sometimes, they go around the front instead, and we see them take things from the tops of the hedges, or directly off the living room windows.I signed up for the local ‘Batwatch’ to have bat boxes installed, but they told me they were already over-subscribed. 🙂

I look forward to bat season every year, Beth. I think they are eating the biting insects attracted to me sitting outside. They roost in the big Oak tree in the back garden, and also take insects like moths off the glass of the kitchen windows. Beetley is well-known for bats. 🙂

I used to teach 2 young children whose parents ran a science center called the bat zone. they taught my class (and me) all about bats, and their very important role in the world, and taught the children not to fear them. it was eye-opening and I love seeing them. yes, each one eats thousands of mosquitoes and other pests each day, and are good to have near your home.
