Not yet halfway through 2021, blogging on WordPress seems to have calmed down. I haven’t been put in Spam for some time now, and I am really pleased to still be able to use the Classic Editor for the time being.
Checking out the revised Block Editor, I found it was a lot easier to create a basic post, even adding photos and links. Many bloggers have completely embraced it now, and wouldn’t return to the old editor even if it was an option. Some of them are also producing excellent tip posts and video turorials which are a real help to those of us who find the technical changes daunting.
It seems we have found some middle ground, with those of us still clinging on to Classic currently able to do so, and some who hated the Block Editor coming around to see the benefit of its extra features. I don’t blog on a phone or tablet, I use a PC. So I cannot speak for those of you blogging on mobile devices. However, it does all seem to be going a lot more smoothly than expected in 2021.
And no, I am not going to say anything negative this time, I’m trying to be positive about my blogging hobby from now on.
Another bonus has been the number of new bloggers who seem to understand not only what to do, but how to do it well. They leave nice comments, reply to comments, and don’t expect everything to happen overnight. Well done to all of you who can recognise yourselves in that category. I hope you carry on blogging, and soon become part of this great community.
So that’s all really. After more than two years of constantly slagging off everything to do with ‘Mr Blocky’, I have finally stopped.
I’m hanging on to the classic editor for dear life! I’m not a huge fan of the block editor!

Me neither. I still use Classic every day. But when they remove it, I will be able to use the BE for posting basic stuff.
Best wishes, Pete.

Very enjoyable read this morning, needles to say I have not got much else done. I did giggle reading that Jimmy was upset to discover the Black Death could be cured! Nice Twist!

I find myself in the opposite, at the moment. I’m flooded with ‘follow my blog’ comments, would possibly commit harry carry (just kidding) if the classic editor dropped off the face of the earth, and new bloggers who… could benefit from being in my classroom. Know what I mean? I think it’s funny how these things ebb and flow. Makes me smile.

I will help you with the Block Editor when the time comes. I know what you mean about some bloggers being in your class. 🙂 There’s a lot of ‘Text-Speak’ going on with some of the younger people too.
Best wishes, Pete.

Thank you, Pete. I like your term ‘text speak’. How do they even get through school?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Schools here have almost abandoned spelling and grammar, even in exams. Of course, for homework and some test papers, they can use ‘spellcheck’ on their laptops or phones, but they are not actively marked down for spelling mistakes any longer. The idea seems to be that if they ‘got the idea’ of the subject, spelling is no longer important. Just as well I am not a teacher! 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

Help me, Rhonda! That’s a popular American phrase for OMG, used by us cool oldsters long before OMG was a ‘thing’. Thank you, Beach Boys. Just so you’re in the know. 🙂 All the smarts and ‘got the idea’ in the world won’t amount to a hill of beans in the working world if you can’t spell or write. Sigh! Best to you, Pete.

As I’ve told Support, I really, really have tried with the block editor, but I just can’t use it. Long live the Classic Editor!

I agree that Classic should have remained an option, but resisting the inevitable has now become like King Canute deciding to stop the tide coming in.
If you are happy with a basic blog post, I did one using the Block Editor, and I know nothing at all about technology.
This explains it.
Best wishes, Pete.

Me too, Pete! But honestly, i got not closer to this new one, after i had recognised these sub- sub- and submenues. 😉 It had remembered me on parts of the SAP software, i had used some years in the past. Just the different menues to Windows, or Linux. Michael

If they keep chipping away at classic editor bloggers they will be able to remove it altogether. I dread the day.

I finally embraced the block editor (I’m old and hate change 😊) and am learning to use it. I took me a while to come around, but after just going in and playing with it—and deleting many drafts that went wrong—I think I’m getting the hang of it. Good luck with it!

I initially disliked the Block Editor, and only switched over because they eventually made it difficult to have to use the Classic Editor, but yeah, I am learning to use it, too, and slowly quite taken to it.
Also, thank you so much for what you have written in the last two paragraphs; it is such a beautiful and encouraging message to read. Looking forward to more! 🙂

A good approach! I’ll continue with my Luddite tendencies until the choice is finally removed, though. I’ve made a couple of posts with the Block Editor, and appreciate how easy it makes embedding videos, but I’m a creature of habits!

I find the block editor OK. All I use are the paragraph for text, image, and classic for the bits I put in to end the text before the promo starts 🙂
Oh and now they’ve got ’embed’ I use that as well.
It’s handy for putting in the url of the book you’re promoting

As you know Pete, I stopped fighting it when reverting to classic caused some very strange hiccups for my blog…I use the block editor, don’t love it but have figured out much of it…and I will say that the amount of spam has dropped, so whatever protocols WordPress strengthened seem to be working!

I do blog exclusively on an iPhone and when WordPress “decommissioned” (their word) the classic editor on its iOS app a few weeks ago, my choice was to either leave WordPress or attempt to embrace the block editor. I decided to do the latter and it’s not that bad. I’m managing to crank out posts on my iPhone with the block editor and because the iOS version of the block editor doesn’t have all of the bells and whistles of the PC version of the block editor, I’ve had to keep my posts rather simple, which is probably not a bad thing.
