Ollie: An Eventful Walk

For the last few days, Ollie has not had much fun on his walks. Many of his regular doggy pals have been notable by their absence, and the few dogs he did encounter didn’t seem to like him that much, including one tiny terrier who attacked him on sight.

The day before yesterday we got a real soaking in unexpected rain, and yesterday we only saw one other dog, in more than two hours of walking around.

Today was sunny to start, with ‘showers’ supposed to arrive after 3 pm. So I set off a bit earlier, and it proved to be a good plan. Ollie soon met up with a couple of friendly Spaniels he knows, and the new arrival of a small white Staffordshire Bull Terrier proved to be a friendly encounter too.

Over on Hoe Rough, there seemed to be no dog-walkers today. But halfway round the right hand path, Ollie spotted a white-tailed deer crossing the path up ahead, and took off in hunting mode. No chance of catching it of course, but until it went to ground in a dense thicket of shrubs, he had a good chase.

Then he decided to track the animals route, nose to the ground, sniffing like a Bloodhound.

He was excited enough to need a long dip in the river before we started on the return journey to Beetley Meadows. Once back over the bridge, Ollie was delighted to see little Lola, the affectionate Shih Tzu. And she was in the company of Zen, the feisty miniature Chihuahua.

The three of them had a good meet, with strokes and cuddles all round, and lots of sniffing and running in small circles.

By the time we got home, Ollie was ready for his dinner, and he is now sleeping soundly next to me, after his eventful walk.

  4. Our Jackie still love the hunt and when she gets the scent she is amazing to watch. I still mange to hide from her from time to time and she never fails to find me, by scent not sight…maybe I should have a bath 🙂

  6. My thoughts were on the same line as Robbie’s. It sounds like Ollie had a wonderful day, and you enjoyed the walk as well. Here in the city, there are so many dogs it’s unthinkable to not meet one, but there are always some truly friendly ones who love a cuddle from complete strangers, and that makes my day. Keep well!

    1. Thanks, Olga. When Ollie has a boring walk, you can sense that in his mood. So meeting a few doggy friends and chasing a deer makes all the difference to him.

  9. Great post 🙂 I am so glad that Ollie had a fantastic day and he had more friendly encounters with some of the other dogs like that tiny terrier from a few days back as you mentioned. Anyway, keep up the great work as always 🙂

    1. Ollie also chases squirrels, but we haven’t had that many around here lately. There have been some Buzzards flying over Hoe Rough. I think they scared the squirrels away. 🙂

  15. So…the Shih Tzu, a Chinese breed, was given the Spanish name Lola.
    And…the Chihuahua, which is a breed named after a state in Mexico, was given the name Zen, a teaching that originated in China.
    And…the Shar Pei, a Chinese breed, was given the name Ollie, which is… Oh, never mind!

    1. Ollie was named after Oliver Cromwell of course. One of my historical heroes, as he executed a King! 🙂
      His full name is Olver Cromwell Johnson. Ollie for short.

  20. I loved hearing about Ollie’s adventurous walk and how he caught up with some old friends! I know when our pup Shaggy visits with his friends he’s happier! They do enjoy their community. C

  21. It dawned on me while reading this Pete,
    Ollie is not only your companion.
    Ollie is going to keep you alive.
    Those two hour walks are the best thing you can do for yourself at our ages!

    1. Yes, he has undoubtedly kept me going so far since retirement, Frank. Even with the extra wine drinking and lockdown bun-eating. 🙂 He has slowed down from the ‘old days, but we still do around 6 miles a day, every day.

  23. Glad that Ollie had a good walk today Pete.. I know how they miss their friends.. we used to walk a 7k beach north of Dublin and Sam used to race along the sand waiting to see this tiny little white dog called Abbie…if she was not there we was depressed all day.. they need their network as much as we do ours…x

  24. Beautiful deer! So you have white-tailed deer, too. With ours, though, only the fawns have those spots and yours here seems to be not a fwan any more. Plus: it’s too early for fawns yet, isn’t it?

    1. That photo was found online, Pit. The one Ollie chased today was smaller, and I think might have been very young or a small female. I don’t know when they have their young fawns though.

        Around here, they usually have their young ones around the end of May and beginning of June. We’re looking forwardvery much to have those young ones in our yard. We’re wondering, though, if that really severe winter weather of February might have affected them negatively.
