Earlier today, the dog-walk was so miserable and wet, we hadn’t see a soul. Ollie was saturated, I was damp and fed up. Umbrella up, I was trudging alongside the riverbank, head down and avoiding the slight flooding coming over the bank onto the path.
Rounding a corner, I heard a dog barking loudly, and recognised Teddy the Alsatian, who always barks at Ollie because he wants him to play. Teddy’s lady owner also had her other dog, a very elderly black labrador bitch. That dog is not at all friendly, and has to be kept on her lead.
However, Ollie is obsessed with sniffing her, so I decided to put his lead on to stop him going over to her. But before I could do that, he had run behind the owner, and started to sniff the poor dog. She immediately showed her teeth, and Teddy started barking in a protective manner. I shouted at Ollie to come back to me, but the lure of sniffing the Labrador caused him to defy me.
Seconds later, she snapped at Ollie’s face as he attempted yet another ‘intimate’ sniff. The lady owner was very upset, and showed me that Ollie was cut under his eye, about an inch long. It looked a bit like a ‘Boxing injury’, and was bleeding slightly. The owner offered to pay any Vet’s bill, but I reassured her that it was all Ollie’s fault, and I would look at the eye later when I got in out of the torrential rain.
Fortunately, Ollie did not retaliate. He never does.
Home in the dry, we could see the cut under his eye. But it’s not bothering him, and so we left well enough alone. He has to go to the Vet on Tuesday anyway, for something else. I will get it checked then.
Once again, Ollie’s obsession with sniffing other dogs left him with an injury.
He never learns. 🙂
Just seen this post. Ouch! Hope Ollie’s OK 🙂

Just a small scar left now. He’s quite tough. 🙂

He was just doing his thing Pete and had selective hearing. The joys of owning a dog. Here’s hoping he recovers and learns his lesson but being a dog possibly not.

He is strangely attracted to very old female dogs. If he is not careful, it will be his downfall! 🙂
If he was human, I would call him a ‘Granny-Grabber’.
Best wishes, Pete.

I’m glad Ollie is ok! Poor guy. Maybe he learned it’s not worth a sniff? Glad he has antibiotics to help his healing.

Unfortunately, Ollie has never learned about sniffing where he is not welcome. He was lucky it was only a cut eye. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

It was his fault. 🙂

Good job he doesn’t retaliate. Poor Ollie! It’s a shame that he doesn’t understand some dogs want to be left alone. No is no! Mind you, he’s not the only one to repeat his mistakes, that’s for sure. I hope he’s OK. I hope the weather improves as well. Take care.

Thanks, Olga. Considering the Sharpei was a fighting dog in China, Ollie is remarkably non-violent.
Best wishes, Pete.

I do hope Ollie is okay. MoMo is one that does not play well with others that is why we walk early to avoid any altercations…….chuq

I’m sure he will be fine, chuq. Ollie is too friendly for his own good. 🙂

She obviously took umbrage to the ‘intimate’ sniff – the equivalent of Ollie having his face slapped!

He was lucky she didn’t take his eye out. His sniffing obsession often gets him in trouble.

Oh, Ollie! I wish you were in my preschool class. But then, you wouldn’t learn anything because all the children would adore you, even if you were aloof. I’m glad the cut from the bite was okay. You can’t change the spots on a leopard, or the natural instincts of a dog.

I think he would stand some cuddling from those youngsters. They could throw soft toys for him to chase. But keep Gloria well-away from him, he might think she is one of his toys. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

Note to Ollie: “Cranky black labs are nothing to sniff at!”

I keep telling him that, but he keeps sniffing them. Now he has a cut eye to show for his stubborness.

In her defence, she is old and cranky. Ollie should have listened to me, but he so loves to sniff her! 🙂

I was so happy that she didn’t get his eye. I wouild have been down at the ‘Emergency Vet’ situation, £230+ just to show up after hours.

Uh-oh, poor Ollie! I sometimes wonder about getting a dog (not now with two cats) but I don’t think I would handle those kinds of situations well. Comes with the territory I guess.

They are very rare, Susanne. He had a bit of his tail bitten off after sniffing a terrier. Then a few ‘no injury’ nips for being over-dominant. This was the first one for a few years.
Best wishes, Pete.

I think the dog would be tolerant but I wonder about the cats! But maybe when our traveling days are done we’d enjoy having a dog. It’s much easier to leave cats at home.

Poor Ollie! Our dog used to go ahead and stick her nose in people’s crotches very forcefully and have a good sniff. It got us (not her) into trouble a few times 🙂

He is going in because of an ear infection, something he gets regularly. They can check the cut, but it doesn’t look very serious.

Poor Ollie, he was just being friendly. Paul took Dot and Lia out to the park nearby and they ran around in the bushes, which they love. Dot came back with a nail hanging loose and bleeding. She must have caught it on something. The vets are closed by now so we will have to take her tomorrow. Always something with dogs. I hope Ollie will be OK.

Ollie is getting rather stubborn as he gets older. He has always been so obedient. I wonder sometimes if he might be going rather deaf. 🙂
I hope Dot’s nail isn’t too painful. They are so resilient, and don’t like to show pain.
Best wishes, Pete.
