A Very Short Summer

Only a few days ago, I was posting about walking in the warm sunshine, and Ollie having to have three dips in the river to cool down.

Okay, I appreciate that 26C was an unusual temperature this early, but it was only last night that I had to sleep on top of the bedcovers with a fan blowing on me from the end of the bed.

But this is England.

Today started out cloudy and overcast, and didn’t feel too warm.

On Ollie’s walk, he only went into the river once, to have a drink. The sun didn’t appear, and I was walking briskly once again, untroubled by any heat. Although some young girls were swimming in the river, I was reminded that it was only two days ago that I saw almost fifty women and children in the same spot, using tents and towels to shade the youngsters from the hot sun.

The best we could manage here on the 4th of June was 15C. And by 3pm it was raining.

Now it is 6:30 pm, in summer. Still raining, windows closed, gloomy outside, and lights on.

The 21st of June is the longest day. Midsummer, in England.

It was good while it lasted…

      1. People always have to be on the move, and unwelcome guests like to travel with them. Here the weather is the same, in temperature, but less in humidity. Here we are very far away from any ocean. 😉 Best wishes, Michael

  4. Wow! Yes, it was very hot for England. Here, I don’t know if it’s me, because last year was weird all around, but I’d say that so far it has been milder than it is usually, and we only had a few really hot days, and that was quite a few weeks ago, although they are forecasting an extremely hot summer. We are hoping to escape for a bit, if they let us, but we shall see. I hope that is not the last of summer yet, Pete. 😉

    1. It has reappeared this week, Olga. 23 C today, and they say perhaps 27/28 C by Wednesday. I don’t mind any temperatures, as long as it isn’t raining and I get to have dry walks with Ollie.

    1. If we are lucky, July and September can be dry. August is usually hot, but often humid with thunderstorms. Then it’s nine months of winter! 🙂

    1. That heat seems to be a real feature of the southern states, Ron. Presumably why so many people have airconditioning?
      We should have temperatures in the low 70s next week. I don’t mind about the temperature, as long as it isn’t raining.

  10. The weather is so messed up here too. After a few nice days the rain came again. But it’s relatively warm.

    But the reports of your walks with Olli in the rain are quite amusing for us readers. 😉

    1. Thanks Irene. We had a nice day yesterday, 20C and sunny. Today we are expecting more rain in one hour’s time, supposed to last until nightfall.

  13. We’ll take some of that rain here on the Alberta prairie! We are breaking records with our early heat… yesterday it was 36C!
    Back to normal today with a forecasted high of 20C… and a chance of rain later in the day…!

  17. Yesterday lights on all day but no rain until late afternoon and overnight. Today it just looks as though he lights were on all day. So nice I went out without a jacket which is almost unheard of for me. I’ll try and send you the right weather for tomorrow Pete.

  19. The weather has been really unexpected all over. We have been having rain for the last month and with that comes cooler weather. I do hate to see what the weather will be when the rain stops🔥🥵

  23. haha, here summer stretches through September and sometimes (God help us) into October! So the 21st may be the longest day, but it sure isn’t MID-summer to south Floridians.

  27. I know what you mean! We had a couple days of blazing hot weather this week, close to 90 degrees. Starting today we come crashing back to normal with rain expected tonight and cooler temperatures in the low 60’s on the way. You’ve got to enjoy it while you can! 🙂

    1. Maggie, it is so frustrating! We lose 27 days rain out of 31 days in May, get four days of a lovely summer, then back to how it was. Sometimes, living in England requires endurance beyond acceptable levels.
