Monday: A Late Message

Beetley was hit by an unexpected power cut today. From 14:56 until 21:38, we had no electricity at all.

So it was a cold sandwich for my dinner, and an exceptionally boring evening with no computer, Tablet, or TV.

I will do my best to get to all your posts and comments sometime tomorrow.

So much for modern living! Power cables ‘affected by trees’. The trees were there decades before power cables, so you think the power company might have known. πŸ™‚

Country living!

Best wishes to everyone, Pete.

  1. I have rigged up two battery backup systems, one for the router so we get to keep the internet, although the phone provides a good standby for that. The second to keep the solar panels that heat our water in the summer, or the pumps for the furnace that heats our house in the winter. Both backup systems keep us going for a few hours, but if they fail then the generator is fired up, although its normally at this point that power is returned. after I have spent twenty minutes getting it ready for operation πŸ™‚

    1. In your situation, you have to be well-prepared. Using the Internet here on the phone is not much good during a power cut, as we have to have an electronic signal booster to make the phones work well in Beetley.
      Best wishes, Pete.

  2. Nothing worse than power cuts, Pete. There are lots here but we have an automatic generator now. I was a bit mean and told my husband that I wasn’t going to live in the dark in Africa and would go back to the UK without him. Needless to say, I got my generator. We are getting power cuts every day right now so I am really glad I made him do it.

  3. My husband just came home from work and told me about a tree he saw that was leaning over a car and about to fully topple over. He told a policeman who replied “Yeah. That has been happening for a while.” I guess we just need a hard breeze before someone loses their car and their power!

  4. The lack of common sense and lack of planning seem endemic. I’m sure it wasn’t intentional on the part of the tree. Still… I hope they sort it out pretty quickly. All the best, Pete.

  5. Ugh hate this… I remember when I was a teenager our entire city was shut down by a multi day power outtage … We resorted to portable battery powered radios to pass the time and ate all the ice cream in the freezer lol it was lovely for like 2 hrs lol

    1. My radio is a mains one! πŸ™‚
I sat in the garden (and watered it) for a long time. Then after I gave up waiting and had something to eat, I fell asleep on the sofa! πŸ™‚
      Best wishes, Pete.

  6. Just shows how dependent we are on electricity; if Tesla had been listened to, all electricity supply would have been wireless, but I’m not sure how safe that would have been either……… Cheers, Jon.

    1. If it is anything like our frequently-interrupted wi-fi signal, I wouldn’t want to rely on that, Jon. πŸ™‚
Beetley has no gas supply, so we are 100% dependent on electricity.
      Best wishes, Pete.

  7. I’m sorry Pete! Due to the location in the border area to the former communist enemy, we at least have the advantage that as much of the infrastructure as possible has been buried in the ground. At least you had more “Ollie time”. πŸ˜‰ Have a nice day! Best wishes, Michael

  8. Pete, after the devastating California wildfires of the past few years, most of the power companies will shut off power when it gets too windy, as some downed trees have hit wires and caused the fires…you have little or no warning, and the power stays off until the wind dies down, also with little or no warning…such is the new way of life in California

    1. We get regular short power cuts, but last night was exceptionally long, and lasted right around dinnertime for all the families too. (There is no gas here in Beetley, it is all-electric.)
      Best wishes, Pete.

  9. It’s 2:00 in the afternoon here in Las Vegas. The mercury is rising fast. Since I’ve turned off my A/C for the day in order to save money on my power bill, I will now turn off my computer to save its electronics.
