Heading South

Tomorrow, I will be leaving the confines of Beetley, passing through the Norfolk County border checkpoints, and heading south with Julie and Ollie.

For the first time since March 2020, we will be visiting relatives and friends in Essex and Kent, on a 250-mile round trip. I know that’s not much by American standards, but after close to eighteen months of lockdown, it feels like a real escape to me.

As a result, I will be away from the blog for a few days. The serial will return after I get back, and I won’t be doing any other posting, or commenting on blogs I follow. I suppose I could try to manage that on my Fire Tablet, but I doubt I will want to struggle with that.

I thought I would let everyone know, in case you thought I had dropped dead!

Best wishes to you all, Pete.

  1. Pete, have a safe, relaxed trip – isn’t it great that we are slowly getting back to this “new normal?” Airlines here in the US report that booking are ABOVE where they were before the pandemic!

      1. Pete, I have the same unease here…even though California is 70% vaccinated…and since the vaccines are virtually 100% effective, we are only seeing those who aren’t getting the shot becoming ill…it’s just bad because children under 12 can’t get protected yet so the ill-informed can make innocent people ill…sad.

  2. Wishing you well and a safe journey. We are going the other way in October but I’m concerned about the Dartford tunnel as last time we used it it took cash but I’m not sure it does now. You will be fine going the other way. It’s very hot down here at present. We are going to Yorkshire but I don’t like the M1. Longing for a holiday. A change is as good as a rest?

    1. You have to have a Dartcharge account or pay by phone, Julie. There isno longer a cash or card option. It’s very easy to set up, and it means no more really bad queues at the tunnel or the bridge, though there is usually still something of a bottleneck going through the tunnel.
I have had a Dartcharge account since moving to Norfolk. You can add car registrations for more than one car, and they send an email to let you know when you need to top up.

        1. I know what you mean, Julie. I haven’t really used any cash during the last year. Even seaside car parks in Norfolk want card payments now. I suppose it saves them employing someone to empty the cash.

  3. Enjoy the change of routine, Pete. I also have a relative in Kent, plus one in Berkshire, which will make it a fairly long round trip from north Yorkshire, so I think I’ll give it a couple more months before I envisage taking on such a long journey. Interesting times, indeed. Cheers, Jon.
