Not wanting to miss the free update, and perhaps have to pay for the new version of Windows, I have been checking the situation.
Today, I discovered this in my Settings.
Great news—your PC meets the minimum system requirements for Windows 11. Specific timing for when it will be offered can vary as we get it ready for you.
As you can see, it is still pending, but at least I now know I have a compatible PC.
I hope to get this update too, and Win11 is compatible with my scanners and other devices i need. Thanks for the information, Pete! xx Michael

No doubt we will soon hear about all the ‘glitches and fixes’, Michael.

Obviously best to wait until they have sorted out the glitches, but I am watching for any ‘deadlines’.

Thanks, Wilma. I am in no rush to change, just so long as I don’t miss the eventual free update.

I’m hanging on to this laptop as long as I can, it will be 11 years old in 2025 so I may have to buy new and upgrade then. Unless of course Microsoft send the kill switch and I have to do it sooner 🙂

Yes, there’s no panic about upgrading just yet. I simply don’t want to miss the deadline for the free option.
Best wishes, Pete.

I’m still working with Windows 7. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right?

It stopped working on my old PC. Too many glitches. I will hang on to W10 for a long while yet, I suspect.
Best wishes, Pete.

I purchased a new Lenovo Laptop this past Sunday and the sales rep said Windows 11 will be available on Oct.5, and it is. I don’t believe you have to pay if you are already running 8 or 10. It took me a while to warm up to 10, so I’m wary of 11 and all the bells and whistles it supposedly carries. I read that Windows 11 gives Grammarly and WordPress problems, so I am not sure that I will be making the switch as of yet.

Thanks for the valuable tips, Phil. The last thing we need is more problems with WordPress! 🙂
I found this. Seems like they don’t support Internet Explorer.
‘Internet Explorer: Due to browser incompatibility, some themes are not fully functional in Internet Explorer 11 or earlier. If you are using Internet Explorer 11 or below we recommend upgrading your browser for an optimal experience.’
I use Google Chrome for blogging, which seems reasonably reliable.
Best wishes, Pete.

I use Google Chrome for blogging and general searching. Grammarly and WordPress work with Google, but not well with Edge. With all the techies in their employment, seems someone could come up with a fix.

I keep wondering about the normal teething problems – will we get them I wonder?

I’m sure there will be loads of them. Probably best to wait until the last deadline for a free download.
Best wishes, Pete.

There is also a compatibility tool on their site. I will go with it eventually, but I’m content to allow everybody else to experience the teething problems.
Think particularly, if you have and external devices (USB devices, say) which might stop working if they don’t have the correct drivers. Mouse? Keyboard? Webcam? Disk Drive?

Thanks for adding that. I will wait and see how long the free period of download is, then decide at the time.

I have windows on my work laptop but have not received a notification. Hopefully one will comed through!

It wasn’t notified as such, I just checked the settings. I will wait and see what happens after the launch today, and see if there are issues for users.
Best wishes, Pete.

Just been reading about it and it all sounds a bit iffy at the moment with it not actually being finished. My work laptop here is quite old but I found this nugget “Microsoft says it will be supporting Windows 10 with features and/or security updates until 14 October 2025. In fact, the next major update for Windows 10 is inbound, Microsoft says. ” So I’m not going to bother with the upgrade as I’ll need a new lappy by 2025 anyway.

Mary’s husband told me about the 2025 support window. I might well be due a new PC by then. 🙂

Yes I was wondering what to do or how we get the update

If you check settings, it will tell you if you can get it. W11 was only launched today, so best to see how early users react to it.
Best wishes, Pete.

Not sure I could willingly choose to do this, after last time…

I stayed with W7 after 10 was launched and then it crashed my PC and I had to buy a new one. So I will probably try the W11 update with fingers and toes crossed.
Best wishes, Pete.

Actually, I am thinking of changing to Apple… Microsoft is getting far too annoying…

I can’t afford to change, but Apple stuff is lovely. (Albeit 3 times the price) 🙂
