So the news is out that Prince Andrew (now just supposedly ‘Andrew’) is to settle out of court. As the date of the sworn on oath deposition drew closer, he blinked first, and will pay Virginia Giuffre ‘in excess’ of £12,000,000 for something he claims he didn’t do, and supposedly to ‘prove his innocence’.
(Anyone know how paying someone off proves you didn’t do it?)
Yes, that is TWELVE MILLION POUNDS, mostly funded by his mother, Queen Elizabeth. Yes, our Queen, the very same.
Once again, status and privilege buys its way out of crime.
This begs the question, so I will ask it of all of you.
Would you give twelve million pounds to someone who accused you of something you swear you did not do? Just to make her go away, and to let your mum (who is paying the money, don’t forget) enjoy her platinum jublilee celebrations with the stain of your court case hanging over her?
I wouldn’t pay anyone even £1, if I knew I hadn’t done what I had been accused of, I can tell you that.
The icing on the unbelievably corrupt cake is that Royal watchers are starting to claim that Andrew now hopes to be able to ‘return to the public eye’, and that this should now be ‘all behind him’. There is talk of him fronting a UK Charity in aid of young women who have been trafficked and sexually abused.
I hope they are joking.
It is unbelievable.
That leaves you speechless.

Both Boris and Andrew must be relieved that the war in Ukraine has knocked them off the headlines, Irene.

Yes, unfortunately that is the case.
First Corona was the constant topic and now it is this terrible war very close to us. I really hope that somehow this turns out well. That makes me really, really sad. And of course I’m scared. The last time I was afraid of a third world war was in 1972 when the Israelites were at war with the Arabs.

Hi Pete, I personally am of the view that the royals are way past their sell by date. They have played an important part in Britain’s past but they are no longer a benefit to society. At least, that is how I see it.

I agree completely, Robbie. I am not even convinced that we needed them in the past.
But they knew no better then.

The political elite rarely face justice. That’s certainly true here in the States, and likely true most everywhere.

We have had many top politicians who have been ‘shamed’, and some even served time in prison. But the royals are a law unto themselves, David.

Pete, you may remember that I produced a ten hour mini-series called “Royalty A-Z”, along with Prince Edward. Something happened during the taping that forever changed my perception of the family…the manner in which they dealt with each other that was sad and sobering to experience…I have never shared the story but perhaps will someday.

Good word, Chris. To my mind it applies to all of the royals, and also to the accuser, who claimed she didn’t want money, ‘only justice’.

I was surprised that he settled with cash. I guess I was naive enough to think she wanted a public apology. Oh well.

He was always going to settle because he did that crime, and probably worse. It was just a question of how much. I lost respect for his accuser too, after she went on record saying that she wanted no money, only justice. Yeah, like I believed either of them. Sad,and cynical in the extreme.

When I saw this on the news yesterday I almost laughed out loud reading the quotes about how he was innocent but ‘let me pay you an exorbitant amount of money because I support your cause… If he indeed steps back into the spotlight – especially for a charity like that – then the gaslighting has been 100% effective. It is a whole lot of BS.

The cynicism of it all is just appalling in the extreme, Maggie. And the Queen is paying her off with OUR money! I also lost respect for his accuser, who claimed to want justice. Then it turned out that justice for her was £12 million and no admission of guilt.
Best wishes, Pete.

I hope they are joking too. I wouldn’t take money from such a “charity”. And I would not give someone a pound to stop them saying I did something I didn’t do. 12 MILLION? Disgusted.

They say it is the Queen’s ‘personal money’. But where did she and her family get all that from in the first place? The people of course.

I would have had more respect if he had admitted at least meeting her. Considering there were photos of them together, he must think we are all blind, as well as stupid. But his accuser should have refused to settle, and publicly shamed him in court. Now everyone thinks she only wanted money, not justice.
Thanks, Ron.

You’re not a Royalist then Pete? Neither am I. Whilst I do feel a bit sorry for Queenie, that money is public money even if indirectly so I am not a happy with this outcome!

I have no sympathy for any of them, Paul. This is a disgrace, on top of previous disgraces. They should be abolished, then sent to live on a council estate in Willesden, in my opinion.

According to the Guardian the sum is likely to be ‘up to £7m’, not that that makes it much better. But any attempts to rehabilitate himself as a royal would be unacceptable, given that he hasn’t faced trial
LikeLiked by 1 person
Actually I misread that, it’s ‘at least 7m’ so you could well be right. The idea that people can just buy their way out of justice is utterly repugnant

The conflicting amounts may be due to confusion over dollars/pounds, Sarada. I was referencing a link from the Daily Telegraph (a right-wing royalist paper) that claimed the £12 million plus amount)
But if he didn’t do it, £1 is too much. So we now know he did it, trial or not.
Best wishes, Pete.
