Sunday Musings On A Sunny Morning

Greeted by sunshine and 20 degrees this morning. (68F) That’s cheerful, and (almost) compensated for the crows waking me up at 4:30am and it taking me ages to get back to sleep again.

Still no news about whether or not my driving licence will be renewed. Approaching four months since my application, and no reply to the medical forms I sent off recently. So I am driving around as much as I can, while I still can.

On Monday and Tuesday this week, we had the gardening company in to smarten up the back patio. The old wooden dining table had to go, as some of the wood had rotted. I broke it up to use on the log-burner next winter. We will evetually get a smaller table. The 8-seater table bought in 2011 has only been used to full effect on two occasions since, and spent most of it’s time under a cover, or being soaked by unexpected rain. One of those ‘seemed like a good idea at the time’ purchases.

I’m giving UK politics and the war in Ukraine a miss this week. I expect, like me, most of you are worn out with all that this year.

Lots of news about the Queen’s 70th Jubilee celebrations. Patriotic bunting in supermarkets, ‘Platinum Jubilee’ special offers, and various sycophantic reports and celebratory concerts and events. Regular readers will know I am not in favour of a monarchy, so you can guarantee I will be showing no interest in the Jubilee whatsoever.

Ollie has been back cooling off in the river, and started to eat his dinners properly again after a few days where he seemed to be starving himself deliberately. It was a relief when he began to eat everything again.

  2. Good to know Ollie is feeling better. The weather has been terribly hot here, although today it’s cloudy and it has rained a bit. I’m with you on the royal front. Here we’ve had the previous king (let’s not get me started on him) visiting Spain, and it’s been a circus. Amazing, considering…

    1. Thanks, Robbie. I have always despised the twin concepts of Royalty and Aristocracy. They represent the top tier of a class system that has kept ordinary people in this country as subservient second-class citizens.

    1. Strangely enough, David, the seagulls used to wake me up at dawn in Camden. Unless the sirens got there first. Now I live so much closer to the coast, I never see or hear a seagull in Beetley.

    1. It was as if he was just ‘deciding not to eat’, John. One more day, and he would have had to go to the Vet. Then he started to eat again, as if he knew. But he still only eats around half of what he would devour this time last year. Maybe he is getting so old he needs less food because he is not so energetic? You know I worry about my best friend.

  11. (1) Crow’s feet are a real eye-opener. Sometimes, you just have to wake up to the facts.
    (2) Nicolas Cage suggested you drive angry. (I wonder if Amber heard that suggestion?)
    (3) Water table: The depth below a patio table which is saturated by water, typically due to excessive rainfall.
    (4) You normally go right to the Ukraine news. But this week, a U-turn?
    (5) I know you don’t care about the monarchy. But what about Julie and the Jubilee?
    (6) It was a relief when Ollie began to eat everything again. Because you didn’t really want to do all that homework anyway.
    (7) My Sunday puzzle is piece-full.

    1. It might have been the sudden warmer weather, but for 4 days he hardly ate anything. I said that I was going to take him to the Vet the next day, but then he ate everything. (Maybe he understood…)

      1. Yes! One of my cats did that once. When I said “vet” he was instantly cured. Turned out he didn’t want to live with me and he set about finding himself the perfect home, with a family vs single woman.

  17. Beautiful days are meant to be mindful. I hope yours is relaxing. The upheaval of the last seven months is drawing to a close.
    Next Thursday is my last day of school. My daughter and I will be driving 2,000 miles east to Virginia. A new home, a new job.
    New photos.

  19. Probably a no-brainer but have you thought about an electric bike? It’d get you around without the effort of a pushbike. Not great in winter but still…

    1. I have considered an electric bike, and also a road-legal mobility scooter in the event I lose my licence, Sarada. The problem is that most local roads here have a 70mph limit and no pavements, so riding either into town would pose a considerable risk. I also think it is ironic that I would be legally allowed to drive a mobility scooter at 8mph on a road that I was not licenced to drive a car on.

  22. Best wishes back to you Pete. The Mrs and I are burned out on the Ukraine fiasco, so we are back to Netflix and Amazon for the few good series they offer. The local news is depressing, so we tend to spend more time on the patio enjoying the birds. We have a particular Cardinal that sings like Pavarotti. The Mockingbird is showing signs of intimidation and has upped his repertoire. I named him Cardinal Puff and the Mockingbird, Harper Lee. Have a peaceful Sunday.
