Some films I shouldn’t like

As well as reading no books lately, I am also at an all-time low for film watching. So here is a reblog of an old film post from 2013 that very few of you have seen previously.

There are certain films that a serious film fan just should not admit to liking. They should revile them, pour criticism upon them, and expose their flaws and weaknesses, all the time secretly enjoying them, in private. The following films all fall into this category, for some reason or another. Trouble is, I really like them all, and I will try to explain why.

Pretty in Pink. A 1986 American romantic drama, with High School kids fretting over relationships and Prom dances. Come on, me? It should just go into the bin, surely? But no, you would miss out on some great performances, good characterisations, and some young actors really stepping up, to lift his film out of its brat-pack roots. You even get Harry Dean Stanton, as the pouting Molly Ringwald’s dad. This hackneyed tale of poor girl from the wrong side of the tracks, falling for rich boy…

  2. Both “Pretty in Pink” and “Blair Witch Project” were must watch movies when my daughter was young. I watched them too just to see what the fuss was about. Now my granddaughter has seen them too. I guess some “bad” movies are essential to adolescents (and some of us older folks.)

    1. Films that started out being derided can often become ‘classics’, given enough time. I still enjoy watching ‘Pretty In Pink’ now, if it comes on TV.

  6. As an example, I shouldn’t like “Look Away” (2018). Rotten Tomatoes describes the film like this: “Maria is an alienated high school student whose life gets turned upside down when she switches places with her sinister mirror image.” They give the film a rotten rating of 17%. I think it’s a good film!

  10. Pete, I love this list! “Pretty In Pink” is perfect “life in the US as a teen in the 80’s”, “Excalibur” shows how great a Director John Boorman could be, and Vincent Price…well, Vincent Price! Really fun mix of genres, and I am a “Blair Witch” fan as well because the execution is so well done!

  11. Everyone’s a critic. Just like what you like and enjoy your life. There’s too many other people trying to make a living from telling everyone else what to like, or what to do.
