Comments Glitches Again

It looks as if WordPress has put me on the naughty step again, for reasons best known to them.

On some blogs I follow, my comments are coming up as ‘Anonymous’. On some others, I am being asked to ‘Fill in required fields’. But there are no required fields to fill in, so my comment will not appear. This is happening on a few blogs at the moment, but may well spread. As we all know from experience.

So if you spot one of my ‘Likes’ on your blog post, but no comment, at least you know I tried.

Best wishes, Pete.

  1. People are having the same problem commenting on my blog. I assumed it was a recent update I had applied and changed the theme to a different one, but that didn’t seem to help. Now, I wonder if it is a more general problem and not specific to my blog. As I don’t have time to do anything this week, I’ll wait and see. But I have lost all patience with this now.

    1. It seems to be mainly affecting self-hosted blogs, Olga. Different browsers (like Safari and Firefox) require ‘cross-tracking’ to be allowed, or WordPress cannot recognise some blogs. It is also happening on some WP blogs, where we are coming up as Anonymous every time we comment.
      Best wishes, Pete.

  2. You are not alone. I can’t comment at half the blogs I visit this week. I’ve also seen a ton of anyonynous names in those whose replies came through. WP gremlins at work big time! 🙂

      1. You’re welcome, Pete. According to what I read on another blog [https://tailsaroundtheranch.blog/2022/08/23/wordpress-issues/} the so-called “happiness engineers} are working on it. But I have my doubts because – considering the exchange presented in that blog – this “happiness engineers” didn’t grasp the fact that the problem doesn’t lie with our own blogs only but with blogs we visit, too.
Let’s hope WP will get over that glitch without at the same time creating another one – at which they seem to be very adept.

  3. I’m experiencing many of the same things. It’s interesting that some of my comments are listed as “anonymous” when half of the identities on some blogs come through. I wonder if it’s more prone to happen with certain themes.

  4. Bummer, Pete. It’s always something. Hope they get it fixed soon. In the meantime, I’m getting an inordinate number of Spam comments. And when I tried to send some directly to ‘Trash’ from discussion settings, too many real ones ended up there too, so I gave that up.

  5. I would guess the WP employees keep messing with things to justify continuing employment to fix the bugs. Or they are all related to the folks in your licensing bureau and are just messing with you. Warmest regards, Theo

  6. Pete, I have encountered that problem recently, and really haven’t been able to determine a “pattern.” It may be specific WordPress website themes, but I’m not sure. I can leave likes on blog posts, and I can leave comments if I back out and use the WordPress reader instead of being on the actual site. I have also had the issue of not being able to leave likes on comments on certain sites also. You are not alone!

  7. This seems to be a problem affecting most WordPress.com blogs and also WordPress.org blogs using the WordPress.com (Jetpack) commenting system. I’ve found that by clicking “change” and manually filling in email, name, website, the comment will show properly, not as anonymous. Hope the powers that be get it resolved, soon!

  8. This happens to me when I seem to be ‘signed out’ of WordPress although I am not. I think I discovered it had to do with cross-site tracking being turned off in my browser settings.

  9. Pete, I started getting that “fill in the blanks” stuff as well, so I been to go to the Reader and click on the stories from there – as I am doing right now – and it’s all good…not sure what the glitch is but boy is it annoying!

    1. I try not to use the fill in the fields feature at all …my comments are open to anyone without moderation … tell me you are not having this problem with Liming’s Links. I have been having it with In Saner Thought recently. But I don’t mind because when I have to fill this thing in, I can do it with a single entry to the first item required. I have my super computer main frame set up to “Fill in” things where information is requested. So if I just enter the first letter of my first name into one of these things, it fills in all the rest of it for me.

        1. Neither of the following are enabled on my settings …Comment author must fill out name and e-mail

Users must be registered and logged in to comment
Nobody should be required to fill out anything in order to comment on my blog and nothing is moderated. I do not know why you are appearing as anonymous.

  10. Pete I hope this comes through as I am doing this blind on my own. I have nowhere where I am but it tells me I am replying to you. Your comments are coming through to me ok. But I am having exactly the same problem as you. Even filling stuff in it still will not allow my comment on some blogs althoug mostly hubbby does it for me. We are having problems too though

    1. I think this is you, Lorraine? I could be wrong. Your comment has come through as Anonymous. I suggest using the Reader function to comment, a tip I got this morning from someone. I tried commenting from the Reader, and it worked.
      Best wishes, Pete. x
