My blogging friend Carolyn sent me a link to this unusual short film on You Tube. It is a remastered cine film that has been colourised and enhanced to High-Definition. Short scenes around Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, and a main line station. Despite the often strange ‘pink’ effect of adding the colour, the enhancement quality is quite staggering to behold, and at times feels almost like 3-D.
Judging by the clothing and vehicles, I would suggest this is very early in the 1930s, as many of the fashions look the same as during the 1920s. Carolyn mentioned how slim everyone looks, and that is very true. I could not find anyone captured on film who appeared to be noticeably overweight.
Carolyn was originally from Britain, but now resides in the north-east of America. You can find her blog here.

The film is only 8 minutes long, and I hope you get a chance to watch it.
This explains the process used to present it as we see it now.
Video Restoration Process:
✔ FPS boosted to 60 frames per second
✔ Image resolution boosted up to HD
✔ Improved video sharpness and brightness
✔ Colorized only for the ambiance (not historically accurate)
✔added sound only for the ambiance
✔restoration:(stabilisation,denoise,cleand,deblur)
There is only one thing i have missed on this beautiful reconstruction. Can you guess, Pete? The rain! Lol Thanks for sharing! xx Michael

The film-restorers added the soundtrack for ‘atmosphere’. The original film was silent. 🙂

Wow–so affecting! Looking at an era that in some ways I feel is my true one. Like a time travel which is so immediate.

I see what you mean about the 3D quality to the film. Most of the images were remarkably sharp. In addition to all the people looking slim, no one was dressed as if they had just rolled out of bed.

Thanks, Liz. This is the best film enhancement of its type I can remember seeing.

People call me an “old bastard”. Yup, I can now say “correct – I was in London pre WW2”.
Utterly amazing.
As Pete & Rob can also tell you, ambulance trolleys are now wider and stronger, ambulances now have automatic loading ramps and it is frequent now to have 2 ambulances turned out for lifting, or the firefighters. Thanks Mackers & co

(1) Crossing the street was a major challenge. I was surprised by how many buses there were!
(2) Sadly, those pigeons are no longer with us…
(3) It was interesting to see all the people becoming aware of the camera in the train station.
(4) Back then, “I see fat people!” was about as believable as “I see dead people!”

Being filmed on camera was still a novelty back then of course. 🙂

Fascinating. Thanks. As for the slim people, notice how everyone is on foot. Walking as a normal part of life makes a difference.

Very true, Elizabeth. Also no burger bars then, and very little ‘fast food’ of any description. 🙂

The buses provided most of the colour people were still very back and white and most of the cars black..but an interesting film and as Sue pointed out nearly everyone was slim…Tweeted for you, Pete xx

People seemed to have more chance of crossing roads safely, Pete, and those buses were in convoys 😃

Crossing the road was undoubtedly less hazardous, I agree. 🙂

Oh, brilliant! Not too many cars on the road, steam trains, generally well dressed people many with hats….and of course, all looking slim!! Nearly 100 years ago and another world….

They changed the ratios to make the walking look more natural too. No ‘jerky movements’. 🙂

This is great! My favourite part is the pigeons at around the 5 minute mark, it’s good to know pigeons never change.
