Retro Music 3

When most people hear the name Fleetwood Mac, they tend to think of the vocals of Stevie Nicks, and the guitar of Lindsay Buckingham. And the songs from the album ‘Rumours’, one of the best-selling records of all-time.

But I think of Peter Green, and Fleetwood Mac as primarily a Blues band, formed in 1967. In 1969, they released a song that I thought was outstanding, even though it wasn’t in a genre that I would have usually listened to at the time. Peter Green left the band in 1970, suffering from serious mental illness. He did return to the music scene at various times in later life, and died in 2020, aged 73.

  1. If not for Peter Green a LOT of big name guitarists would be working at the post office. Most notably would be Santana. The entire “shoe gaze” guitar subculture owes its existence to Green’s work. I could go on for days extolling the talent and contributions of Peter Green but I think people should experience his catalog of work and find out how Peter Green and Jeff Beck kick started modern guitar vocabulary.

  2. I’m a big Fleetwood Mac fan, both their earlier and later recordings. I don’t remember this song. It’s sad to hear gifted singer/musician Peter Green had to leave the group early on, and then died at a young-ish age. Thanks, Pete.

  3. My only knowledge of Fleetwood Mac stems from a CD I bought years ago after listening to my sister’s vinyl album: Fleetwood Mac Greatest Hits. I really enjoy the music, and have listened to the CD often. I didn’t know the song you posted.

  4. Although there is a common name, they are effectively 2 different bands; the later, ‘pop’ songs are very catchy [and successful], but I always love the blues, so I prefer the earlier iteration with Greeny. Cheers, Jon.
