I have long been a fan of Van Morrison. I even went to see him live once, at the Albert Hall. He didn’t seem to be a very nice person, to be honest. He rushed his set, cut short the gig, and hardly looked at the audience.
But you don’t have to like a person to enjoy a song, or a film performance for that matter. What song to choose? I like so many of his songs. But this is one I listen to a lot, a track from the album ‘Moondance’, released in 1970.
Yeah, the caravan is on its way
I can hear the merry gypsies play
Mama, mama, look at Emma Rose
She’s a-playin with the radio
La, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la
Yeah, the caravan has all my friends
Yeah, they’ll stay with me until the end
Gypsy Robin, Sweet Emma Rose
Tell me everything I need to know
La, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la
Turn up your radio
And let me hear the song
Switch on your electric light
Then we can get down to what is really wrong
I long to hold you tight, so I can feel you
Sweet lady of the night, I shall reveal you
If you won’t turn it up, turn it up, little bit higher radio
Turn it up, turn it up, so you know, radio
La, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la
Yeah, the caravan is painted red and white
That means everybody’s staying overnight
Yeah, the barefoot gypsy player ’round a campfire sing and play
And the woman tells us of her ways
La, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la
Turn up your radio and let me hear the song
Switch on your electric light
Then we can get down to what is really wrong
I long just to hold you tight, so maybe I can feel you
Sweet lady of the night, I shall reveal you
If you won’t turn it up, turn it up, little bit higher radio
Turn it up, that’s enough, so you know it’s got soul
Radio, radio turn it up, hmm
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la

I had a child who wanted to play Van Morrison for Gloria.

He has a song called ‘Gloria’, so it would be appropriate.
Best wishes, Pete.

I love listening to Van Morrison. I’m sorry, he’s not a nice person. My son saw him in New York and didn’t like his stage presence.

It does seem strange that he is so rude and grumpy. He has had a good career, doing what he enjoys.
Best wishes, Pete.

If you are going to be a performer I think you should make an effort to be polite at least to your fans but as we all know many “famous” people are arrogant and rude. I met quite a few at JFK and it was always the greatest who were the most humble, nice regular people.

I met quite a few major and minor ‘stars’ when I was an EMT in London. Most of them were insufferable, to be honest, and some stand out as being really obnoxious. I think it comes from a life of being pandered to, and being told they are wonderful.
One of the few genuine celebrities I met a few times was Nigella Lawson, the famous TV chef. She was completely lovely.
Best wishes, Pete.

I have also heard many times that he isn’t the nicest person, and to have treated the audience with such disrespect is shameful as the fans are the ones who have given him the success he has had…still, some great music to be sure!

I was very disappointed when I went to see him. But I still listen to the songs, I just don’t look at him. Thanks, John.
Best wishes, Pete.

I could have chosen from a dozen or more favourites, Liz. But this is as good as any of his that I really like.
Best wishes, Pete.

Great choice! I love Jackie Wilson Said. Some people look a bit confused when I mention the title, but they smile and shake their heads once the hear the tune!!

That’s another one of my favourites, Annette. It was covered here by a British band that had a big hit with it.

I found, during 40 years in the business, that it is often necessary to separate the artist from the art. A decent percentage of “arteests” could easily be considered Not Very Nice People. Or Whack Jobs. Which, I suppose, is why limited access to them is enforced and consumers get what the press mechanism releases.

I feel the same about many film actors, Phil. I have to put aside my dislike of them as people to enjoy their performances on screen.
Best wishes, Pete.

I have heard numerous reports of Van Morrison being a horrible person and an ungracious performer. But I still love his voice – his version of She Moved Through the Fair gives me goosebumps

It’s the same for me, Sarada. I don’t like the man, but I own every album he has ever recorded.
Best wishes, Pete.

Not a fan of the Van, though I do like one of his songs. Can’t remember which though.

Well we can’t all like the same singers, so that’s not an issue. 🙂

No but I can still sing along to Brown Eyed Girl and Moondance when it’s on the car radio. 😊
