In 1966, I was 14 years old. I had already heard of James Brown, but that year he released a song that sounded amazing to me. He co-wrote and produced the song, and I soon had a copy on a vinyl single. Fifty-six years later, I still think it is an amazing song.

  3. In 1964, James Brown came to WV to perform. My dad drove me and 2 friends to the concert. When he pulled up to the curb to let us out he looked around and saw that everyone was black. He was worried, but we assured him we’d be fine. ’64 in the south, you get the picture. The concert was THE best, a full house… and we were the only white people there. He threw his cape into the audience, not too far from me. It wasn’t until I was married that I told my dad we were the only whites in the audience. But, oh what a great time we had.
