When Otis Redding died in a plane crash in 1967, I was 15 years old, and already a huge fan of the singer. I had even managed to see him live in London earlier that year, as part of the legendary Stax/Volt Tour. I was very upset when he died that December. He had many hits, but my personal favourite was his updated version of ‘Try A Little Tenderness’, a song originally recorded in 1932, and already covered by every famous singer since that date.
There is not a month that goes by when I do not play this song, to remind me what a talent we lost in Otis.

There is a long line of artists taken too soon and Otis is one of them although Dock of the bay was his most popular one this one has an edge that I prefer xx

The song was also a hit for Glen Campbell. I just listened to both the Otis Redding and the Glen Campbell versions in order to make a comparison, and I prefer Redding’s.

I am curious about vocal chords…they do vary depending on your racial background and the difference comes across when they sing. Russian choirs have a particular sound that gives me chills. I have never seen mention of what accounts for the differences but I enjoy the many sounds. This was a great song too.

I love this song. My grandad used to sing it to my grandmother, and she would tell him to shut up, lol.

It’s such an old song. My dad had the Frank Sinatra version on record, and he also sang it in pubs. (My dad was an accomplished singer.)

Both my parents’ families were musical. Mum used to play piano in pubs. Dad and his father had good singing voices.
