Retro Music 18

Aretha Franklin is often called ‘The Queen Of Soul’, and with good reason. Her huge hit ‘Respect’ generated many covers, and still sounds relevant today. However, it was another of her hits that first drew me to her, and it is that song I am featuring in this series. This was released in 1968, and was a cover of a Dionne Warwick single, written by Bacharach and David.. As much as I liked Dionne then, I preferred Aretha’s version.

The video has the lyrics as subtitles.

  1. Can’t beat Bacharach. I wanted to be Burt Bacharach does Keith Emerson, or vice versa, when I grew up. Burt said one of the best days of his life was the summer as a teenager he played in the Catskills and found out he didn’t need to keep getting the sh*t beat out of himself trying to play football because girls liked piano players just as much.

  2. One of my all-time favourites. I met my hubby when he was still in the army. He had to do one more tour of duty in a dangerous place before he could leave the army and immigrate to Canada (and marry me). I sang this song every day, hoping he would make it back OK.
