Carole King and Gerry Goffin were two of the most prolific songwriters of the modern age. Then in 1971, Carole released her solo album, ‘Tapestry’. Set to become one of the biggest-selling albums in history, it contained a selection of near-perfect songs, all written and performed by her. It’s a hard choice to choose one, but I have always thought that Aretha Franklin’s version of ‘You Make Me feel Like A Natural Woman’ was too associated with Aretha.
So I choose Carole’s original. I much prefer this version anyway.
I played ‘Tapestry’ to death at the time. I was 19 years old.
Looking out on the morning rain
I used to feel so uninspired
And when I knew I had to face another day
Lord, it made me feel so tired
Before the day I met you, life was so unkind
But you’re the key to my peace of mind
‘Cause you make me feel
You make me feel
You make me feel like a natural woman (woman)
When my soul was in the lost and found
You came along to claim it
I didn’t know just what was wrong with me
‘Til your kiss helped me name it
Now I’m no longer doubtful, of what I’m living for
And if I make you happy I don’t need to do more
‘Cause you make me feel
You make me feel
You make me feel like a natural woman (woman)
Oh, baby, what you’ve done to me (what you’ve done to me)
You make me feel so good inside (good inside)
And I just want to be (want to be)
Close to you, you make me feel so alive
You make me feel
You make me feel
You make me feel like a natural woman (woman)
You make me feel
You make me feel
You make me feel like a natural woman (woman)
You make me feel
You make me feel

Oh, you have hit the jackpot, Pete. She was good of a songwriter as she was a singer. I still have my Tapestry album. It is well loved.

I am pretty bad at singing, but it is impossible to listen to this song and not join in, Pete. I’ll try not to be too loud. Thanks, Pete!

Yes, I sing this too, (badly) and I am far from being a ‘Natural woman’. 🙂

We had the “Tapestry” album in the house growing up, and I often listened to it. So many great songs!

If it hadn’t been for James Taylor forcing her onstage to sing her own songs, we’d never have gotten to hear her. King’s songs are cornerstones and career signatures in so many genres… She is living proof a good song is universal in appeal. And since the Monkees might not have made a single season without her, here’s one of the most beautiful, succinct love songs written, performed by, frightenly enough, a guy who could, in another situation, have been a great rock singer.

I don’t know anyone who didn’t own the album. I also played it to death and my daughter has it now. I also like her style, very natural to this day.

One of the greatest. Most forget she also wrote for others ie Locomotion for Little Eva + Beachboys, Hi de ho for Blood Sweat & Tears, One Fine Day for the Chiffons, I’ll Do My Crying In The Rain for the Everly Bros, You’ve Got A Friend for James Taylor, Oh No Not My Baby for Mannfred Mann, several for the Monkees, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow for the Shirelles, Halfway to Paradise for Billy Fury,
but her best as singer were I Feel The Earth Move, Its Too Late, Been to Canaan, Sweet Seasons & of course You’re So Vain.
I look forward to when ‘Beautiful’ her musical comes to town.
She will be 81 soon.

Ahhh well spotted Phil, of course it was, easy to get Carole, Carly & Roberta Flack all mixed up. BTW Mick Jagger sings briefly on Carly’s song.
