I wasn’t always listening to Motown and Soul records in my teens. Once I approached the age of eighteen, my tastes were becoming ever more varied, and I often liked to listen to ‘softer’songs at the time. This was one of them, released in 1970 on the album ‘Déjà vu’ from Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young.
(It still surprises me that 1970 is 53 years ago!)
I’ll light the fire, while you place the flowers
In the vase that you bought today.
Staring at the fire for hours and hours,
While I listen to you play your love songs
All night long for me, only for me.
Come to me now, and rest your head for just five minutes,
Everything is done.
Such a cozy room, the windows are illuminated
By the evening sunshine through them,
Fiery gems for you, only for you.
Our house, is a very, very, very fine house.
With two cats in the yard,
Life used to be so hard,
Now everything is easy ’cause of you.
Our house, is a very, very, very fine house.
With two cats in the yard,
Life used to be so hard,
Now everything is easy ’cause of you.
I’ll light the fire, while you place the flowers
In the vase that you bought today.

Another great song. I had not known that they were on stage for such a long time. I have to update my knowledge. 😉 Thanks, Pete! xx Michael

They all came from other bands, so had great experience.

I was like you, loving R&B, and also loving new music. This was one of the great groups. Their music is as wonderful today as it was back then. Thanks, Pete.

One of my favourite albums too. Along with 4 Way Street. I played them to death!

I had this on vinyl, and also on a cassette that I played in my car.

As I’m sure you know Pete but for others: Graham Nash wrote this to celebrate his happy home life with Singer Joni Mitchell!

I gave that disk a spin last week. It never gets old. Joni was his inspiration, and he was hers. Sounding like an old guy, they don’t make music like that anymore, and never will again.

I’m old too, so I agree.
Thanks, Phil.

That was a great collection of talent. I think if I lived with Joni Mitchell I would a love song also.

Star performers back then often ended up together. But their relationships were frequently turbulent, or short-lived.

This is one of my favorite songs, Pete. This was another well-worn album in my collection. The influence of music in that era was so much different than what we experience today.

I loved everything CSN&Y recorded. This is one of my favourite tunes. I know, those 53 years flew by didn’t they?

They certainly did, Darlene.

Ah yes, I remember this one. Doesn’t sound like one of their usual CSNY songs though.

It was written by Graham Nash, the ex-Hollies man. I think that’s why it felt more ‘British’, and probably why I liked it so much.
Best wishes, Pete.

He wrote it when he was living with Joni Mitchell, the owner of the two cats, and the new vase!

He did indeed. This explains their relationship very well.
