Retro Music 45

I always had a soft spot for the music of The Four Seasons. The American vocal group had a unique style, led by the signature falsetto singing of the front man, Frankie Valli.

Frankie also released many solo records during his time with The Four Seasons, and in 1967, he recorded a song co-written by another member of the group, Bob Gaudio. This became a huge hit and was covered by many other ballad singers at the time, and later. Andy Williams had such success with it, that the song is often associated with him.

But I prefer the original, with the singalong chorus that everyone joins in with, especially after a few drinks.

You’re just too good to be true
Can’t take my eyes off of you
You’d be like Heaven to touch
I wanna hold you so much
At long last, love has arrived
And I thank God I’m alive
You’re just too good to be true
Can’t take my eyes off of you
Pardon the way that I stare
There’s nothin’ else to compare
The sight of you leaves me weak
There are no words left to speak
But if you feel like I feel
Please let me know that it’s real
You’re just too good to be true
Can’t take my eyes off of you
I love you, baby
And if it’s quite alright
I need you, baby
To warm the lonely night
I love you, baby
Trust in me when I say
Oh, pretty baby
Don’t bring me down, I pray
Oh, pretty baby
Now that I’ve found you, stay
And let me love you, baby
Let me love you
You’re just too good to be true
Can’t take my eyes off of you
You’d be like Heaven to touch
I wanna hold you so much
At long last, love has arrived
And I thank God I’m alive
You’re just too good to be true
Can’t take my eyes off you
I love you, baby
And if it’s quite alright
I need you, baby
To warm the lonely night
I love you, baby
Trust in me when I say
Oh, pretty baby
Don’t bring me down, I pray
Oh, pretty baby
Now that I’ve found you, stay
Oh, pretty baby
Trust in me when I say
Oh, pretty baby

  1. Back in 1996, I got to see Andy Williams perform at his Moon River Theater in Branson, Missouri. As for the song, I’m familiar with it, of course. I don’t recall if Andy Williams performed it, but I do remember him singing “Moon River,” which was one of his signature songs. (I often enjoy listening to Audrey Hepburn singing the song in the film, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”)
