I was 19 years old in 1971, and my music tastes were becoming more varied. Deep down though, I was still a Soul Boy at heart, and that year I heard a wonderful Soul singer with his great new song. I bought this record the same day, then went on to buy his other records for the next four years.
By 1976 Al Green had decided to become a Gospel Minister, and changed his musical direction to Christian music. For me, that was a great loss to the genre of Soul Music.
He still performs today.

Oh man, Al Green was a favorite soul singer. I loved his voice. You picked one of his best songs.

The Reverend Al Green – yes, I think my favourite of his is ‘Let’s Stay Together’, although Bryan Ferry’s version comes in at a very close second.

That is an undeniable classic by Al, and also Tina Turner. Not sure I have heard Bryan’s version, I will look it up.
(Can’t find it, only this one. It’s a different song.)
Best wishes, Pete.

I got into Al Green in part because of Ally McBeal. I love his songs. In particular Let’s Stay Together and his cover of How Can You Mend A Broken Heart from The Bee Gees. What a voice!

Yes, I much preferred his version to the Bee Gees original. I was sad when he moved into Gospel.
Best wishes, Pete.

Yeah I tend to think there is something special when someone has written the song and then performs it but Al Green really did a wonderful interpretation.

When they used ‘How Can You Mend A Broken Heart’ in the film ‘Notting Hill’, it opened up a new fan base for his soulful songs.

I love his hits, like ‘Let’s Stay Together’, and ‘How can You Mend A Broken Heart’. It annoys me when people say that ‘Let’s Stay Together’ is a Tina Turner song, even though I also like Tina.
Best wishes, Pete.
