Blog Posts: No More Twitter Sharing

Thanks to Mr E. Musk, sharing of your blog posts to Twitter using the automatic process that exists currently will no longer be possible.
I received this email today.

Hi Pete,

From April 30, 2023 you will no longer be able to share your WordPress.com posts automatically to Twitter using Jetpack Social.

Twitter decided, on short notice, to dramatically change the terms and pricing of the Twitter API. We have attempted to work with Twitter in good faith to negotiate new terms, but we have not been able to reach an agreement. As a result, we will need to remove the functionality.

You can still auto-share your posts to Tumblr, Facebook, and LinkedIn. And you are able to share your posts to Twitter manually by pasting the post link into the body of your tweet. In the near future, we are adding the ability to auto-share to Instagram and Mastodon and we are continuing to release new features in Jetpack Social.

Thank you for your understanding with this situation. Please feel free to connect with support if you need any help.

  1. Hi Pete. I’ve just posted and my article was shared automatically to Twitter. Looking back at the email from WordPress, it says no more sharing using Jetpack Social. I wonder whether Jetpack Social is a specific add-in on WordPress (which I and many others don’t have), and whether it is only Jetpack Social which is impacted (rather than those who just share posts in the absence of Jetpack Social)? It will probably take someone with more technical knowledge than me to answer that question! Kevin

  2. I also received the e-mail, although I am used to sharing it manually too when I post anything, so I don’t expect it will make much difference. I suspect it refers to the automatic sharing of posts as soon as they are published, which one could set up before, rather than not being able to share by pressing the button at the bottom of the post, but well… I wonder when Elon Musk will get tired of all this…

  3. I have a Twitter account which I never / rarely use. I remember a similar email from WP when posts would not automatically go to FB. You had to manually do that, and it was a pain.

      1. The only reason I signed up on FB is friends telling me that I will see many more pictures of my grandchildren. True! And, also seeing photos of friends at events is delightful. Best to you, Pete.

  4. I haven’t had this email and my posts are still sharing to Twitter although I haven’t been able to share to Facebook for a couple of years for no apparent reason ! Technology is wonderful.

  6. I am a very reluctant and new Twitter user, occasionally sharing a post to Twitter by using the button as recently as yesterday. It will be interesting to see if that functionality disappears but if it does my short-lived experiment with Twitter will be over.

      1. You’re not missing anything by not being on Facebook. I’m only on it to “build author platform.” When I first started using FB several years ago now, it was a good way to make connections and catch up with people. However, ever since Zuckerman decided on going to the Metaverse, navigating FB and seeing what you actually want to see is nearly impossible.

      1. I also noticed that the 2 posts I wrote this morning where still shared automatically on Twitter. So I think you are correct that it will stop working later today. I have been thinking for some time of leaving Twitter. I will hold on for now, however, if it where to become a chargeable service I would be waving the platform a not very fond farewell. My Twitter appears on the back page of most of my books along with my blog’s address and other contact details. Where I to leave the platform there would be outdated links to Twitter. Obviously this could be easily resolved for e-books, but paperback would still be out there with non-working links. However, I very much doubt that anyone has found me on Twitter as a result of the inclusion of my Twitter handle in my books, so it wouldn’t be a big issue where I to delete my Twitter. Thanks for the post, Pete. Best wishes. Kevin

        1. Would you need to copy and paste the link? My understanding is that you can still click on the Twitter sharing link on a blog and share a post manually, what you can’t/won’t be able to do is share your posts automatically. But my understanding could be incorrect.
