May Musings On A Cold Sunday

The East of England has had some strange weather this week. It started with thunderstorms, heavy rain, and humid temperatures up to 21C. I was wearing shorts earlier this week, then yesterday I was out walking Ollie wearing a heavy winter coat, and gloves. This morning it is struggling to get above 8C, and it feels like winter inside the house.
It certainly doesn’t feel like May. We had better weather in March.

—————————————————————————————

Ollie had a recurrence of head shaking on Wednesday, so it was back to the ear-wash for two days. So far, it seems to have worked. He has been lively out on his walks, and enjoying his food. Keeping my loyal dog fit and happy gets harder as he gets older, but I would never do anything else.

—————————————————————————————-

Food prices continue to climb, with a steady increase every week in our supermarket bill. Everyday items like Olive Oil have almost doubled in price since January, and some vegetables have disappeared from the shelves due to import problems and lack of production in Britain. I sit and wonder how large families can possibly cope, even with two working parents. Then the interest rates rose again, putting more pressure on people with mortgages on their homes, and making it harder for young people to ever buy a flat or house. Our govenment continues to blame it on everything but its own policies. The Ukraine War, the legacy of the pandemic, and runs on banks around the world.
So if that is true, how come the rich are getting richer every day? (Including our Prime Minister, and his cronies.)

—————————————————————————————–

Not much sunshine around, literal or metaphorical. I hope life is better where you are, and that you have an enjoyable Sunday.

  1. Our weather has been as crazy as my cousins (hope they don’t read your blog) too but it was a warm and wonderful Mother’s Day (last Sunday in the states). It sure doesn’t feel like May! Glad Ollie has you to ease his way along the aging process. You take such good care of him. Hugs, C

  2. It is hard here as well, Pete, but it is true that the government is coming up with some schemes to help those in need, although I doubt they will suffice. The weather has also been bizarre, with storms and snow, but as we need water, we are happy (although it is nowhere enough). Thanks, Pete.

  3. Our May weather has been in the low 60’s and the mid 80’s. My giant aloe plant got sunburned. Pollen is at its worst, everything is covered in yellow. Thank goodness Ollie is back on the mend. Don’t even get me started on interest rates and food prices. Best to you, Pete.

  4. Sorry about your poor weather but the heat will come and you’ll forget all about it! We had a rainy and cold spring until the heatwave arrived a few days ago and peaked today with temperatures over 90! Will be happy when it drops down to something more moderate.

  5. The rich are getting richer while we all pay more to help them get richer. For, there as it is here, the deck is stacked in favor of them getting richer while we pay for it. To the barricades! Warmest regards, Ed

  6. This is what makes weather patterns so interesting, Pete. Today is the nicest day of the year for us in the United States. (California)

  7. (1) Please send some cold weather to Southern Nevada before we melt.
    (2) Overheard:
Pete, speaking: “I know how to stop the head shaking.”
    Ollie, thinking: “I’m all ears.”
    (3) We have a game show called “The Price Is Right.” I think the show’s title is just wrong.
    (4) The sun is being obnoxious here. I’m not sure what I’m up to today, but yesterday I watched “American Graffiti” for the first time ever. Some of the actors were so young, it took me a moment to guess who they were. Ron Howard and Cindy Williams were immediately recognizable, though, since they followed up almost immediately with popular TV shows (“Happy Days” and “Laverne & Shirley”).

  8. I just posted a lovely May morning here so you can borrow our sunshine. I am glad that I learned how to economize on food in the early 70’s when we had no money. I never thought I would return to those days, but I have.

  9. I was astonished at the price of olive oil this week and toilet rolls too! I try to keep my weekly spend to £100 including food and all the other household items and I do have a well stocked larder cupboard (that came from my mother’s post war habit) so I top up the items each week, but it does seem a lot when there are only the two of us. Admittedly I don’t buy the cheapest quality. And any alcohol is on top of that. We are fortunate that we have no mortgage or rent to pay.

We had a couple of gorgeous sunny days on Friday and Saturday, today is cloudy but fairly warm if you can say 13 degrees is warm, I somehow expect it to be closer to 20 C by now.

    1. We buy (Andrex) toilet rolls in bulk from Amazon, (45 rolls at a time) and it is a genuinely worthwhile saving, but olive oil is still expensive even on there. Our Tesco bill last week was £102, and that didn’t include wine. Without using a Clubcard, it would have been just over £110)
      Best wishes, Pete. x

  10. Yes, it was cold on our bike ride this morning – only 8 degrees, although it’s warmed up a bit now. My supermarket bill has gone up by about £30 every week, although I still buy the same stuff.

    1. Even trying to save a bit of money on some items, our weekly bill (including Ollie’s food) is never less than £100 now. On top of that we buy toilet rolls, washing machine liquid, and pet treats in bulk from Amazon once every couple of months.
The sun came out here at 13:30, and it has reached 16C at long last.
      Best wishes, Pete.

  11. I have experienced the purity of evil in the world this week Pete…and seen how social media can vilify someone with no facts and pure hatred…I know who was behind it, it wasn’t directed at me but someone close, and while the truth will ultimately prevail, it has been successful in shutting down much if not all of my posting going forward. Not that the world will suffer from that

  12. Everything has become much more expensive for us.
It’s like that everywhere, the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.

The weather is very nice here at the moment. A little over 20 degrees and very sunny. The forecast calls for cooler weather and cloudy weather next week.

    All the best to Ollie.

It’s Mother’s Day today and my daughter and family are coming for cake and tea afterwards.

    Have a nice Sunday.
    Best wishes, Irene

  13. It’s always someone else’s fault as far as politicians are concerned. If they don’t pass a budget here very soon they may not pay our pensions that we all paid for. That will really piss me off. Our temperatures are up and down but I am happy when it stays below 80. I see that a big cyclone is brewing that will affect Bangladesh and Myanmar. They really suffer from weather in those countries. Hope you get back into shorts soon.

    1. The cyclone was on the news earlier. Most of the people living in its direct path have no real houses, only flimsy shelters. There is a real possibility of a major disaster in those countries.
      Best wishes, Pete.

  14. Sorry to hear about Ollie’s reoccurring ear problems….glad to hear he is perking up….weather here is early Summer 90 day 75 night……prices here rising as well but government says inflation is low…..how does that work? chuq

  15. The weather’s really annoying. I am not asking for glorious 30C sunshine in May, but surely an end to this dreary cloud and inconsistency isn’t too much to ask for? The other day I left the house in bright, warm sun, in nothing but a t-shirt, and got soaked on the way home. It’s ridiculous.

I hope Ollie continues to remain healthy and happy, which is all I think any of us can ask for in life.

  16. Not much sunshine in the metaphorical sense -absolutely. We live in straitened times unless you are rich (how come the rich are getting richer every day, indeed) The literal sunshine is apparently due today, and I am just getting a sense of clouds starting to shift here

  17. Mothers day here in NZ today & my younger boy took me out for lunch. Lots of dogs taking their owners for a walk at the beach.
