  1. I love the train! So stylish! And, although completely different, I love the store as well. You’ve found some weird and wonderful pictures once more, Pete. Thanks for sharing them!

  2. This was a wonderful and diverse collection. I could write about each photo. I wonder if someone read the inscription in those wedding rings from the concentration camps and tried to return them – some of them – to family members. That would be a lifetime task, I would have signed-up back in the day.

  3. (1) What happened when a stray cat crossed paths with Camberley Kate?
    (2) The sash actually reads: “I Miss Philadelphia.” Settling in Salina, Kansas was not her best move. (At least she got to meet Toto, a stray dog that was eventually adopted by Dorothy Gale.)
    (3) I think VE Day is fine. Virgil Earp deserved to be celebrated. But what about Wyatt?
    (4) The Mercury Streamliner was the coolest train of all time. Especially in winter.
    (5) I guess it was too late to turn those wedding rings into chain mail?
    (6) In fact, in the early 20th Century, it had yet to be settled whether cars should run on gasoline, electricity, or steam. The whole debate left horses nervous.
    (7) Those woven raincoats were better suited for snow than for rain.
    (8) I’ve been in a couple of country general stores. One time, the bathroom was occupied: “Loo tenant.”
    (9) What does Scandinavian Airlines serve now, reindeer jerky?
    (10) Highlanders in a trench? That doesn’t sound right. (Did soldiers wear a trench coat in the Northern Highlands?)
    (11) That gardener looks remarkably modern, even though he was photographed mowing the grass circa 2500 BCE.
    (12) Alex Karras rode a Brahman bull to Mongolia to pick up his bride. It was such a long trip, he wore out his blazing saddle.
    (13) Said one construction worker to the other, “The World Trade Center will still be standing when Dave Bowman and Frank Poole leave for Jupiter.”

  4. A real mixed bunch but every one fascinating. The train in image 4 looks very like the train from ‘Snowpiercer’ . I wonder if historical images were an inspiration?

  5. You know of course which pictures tug at my heart, but all of these are great. Wrong word probably for the ring picture. I have seen similar before along with pictures of the suitcases and other heart wrenching images. Yet people deny it happened. The SAS picture is fun. BA’s first class service was similar only it was roast beef that was carved seat-side.
