Mablethorpe is an ancient market town on the Lincolnshire coast, just 3 miles north of where we were staying. Since Victorian times it has been developed as a seaside tourist town, popular with working-class holidaymakers from the Midlands. Entertainment is traditional, with beach activities, amusement arcades, shops selling souvenirs, and many places to eat and drink. There is also a small fairground, and a boating lake.
Arriving just one week later this year, we found the town to be very quiet.
(Photos can be enlarged by clicking on them, which will take you to Flickr)
The beach was deserted at 11am.
Some people were heading for the fish and chip shop and Crazy Golf.
A lone walker on the beach, dressed for the chilly wind along the coast.
Someone jogging in the other direction. It was getting cloudy, as you can tell.
The funfair had already closed down for the season on the 11th of September.

It looks perfect. I also prefer them when there aren’t that many people around and you can have some peace and quiet. Thanks for sharing them, Pete.

We deliberately go on holiday after the schools have gone back. That always makes it more peaceful.
Best wishes, Pete.

I like the photo of the lone jogger on the beach. Nice clouds, too. Was there a chance of meatballs?

I have walked the beaches of Whitstable in April and just about frozen to death. English weather is cold for me. It looks peaceful but the lack of people can be a little creepy.

Whitstable has a stony beach, and April is a cold month. Nothing creepy about deserted beaches, they are a bonus, Robbie!
Best wishes, Pete.

It was late April ands I didnβt expect snow βοΈβοΈ. Yes, the beaches in Whitstable are stony which was nice for me – totally different.

It is rather ‘down-market’ there, but I have no problem with that.

What a beautiful seaside town, and perfect time to travel. So peaceful. And I guess you didn’t mind the rides had already shut down for the year. π π

It was very peaceful, and hasn’t changed since the 1960s.

I must admit I am not one for returning to the same place year after year, there are so many other lovely places to visit. You obviously like the peace and quiet there, but I would probably be bored. Though as a kid I rather liked that area and as you say, the beaches are wonderful. The sea not so much!

The sea is brown and cold, I agree. Years ago I would never have gone back to the same place so often, (with the exception of numerous day trips/weekends to Rye) but I really mellowed when I retired and feel very content in Sutton-on-Sea. It is actually where I would prefer to live, but that didn’t work out because of Julie’s job at the time. Julie wants to go abroad next year now we don’t have Ollie, so no doubt we will do that.
Best wishes, Pete. x

Looks lovely and peaceful! September has always been our preference to travel too, since the crowds are gone by then. π

Once the schoolkids go back after the summer holiday here, September is definitely much more peaceful.

It was a very nice day, but the wind at the coast was chilly. The top temperature all week was 16C, John. (61F) Most days it was 11-14. (51F-57F) I still had my shorts on though!
Best wishes, Pete.

Fish and chips would really hit the spot! That beach is wonderful, the more so for being empty. Will you choose to visit at this same time in the future?

We currently intend to go abroad next year, for the first time since 2011. If it was up to me I would just go back to Sutton on Sea, but Julie is keen to see somewhere different. I have talked about a shorter trip, perhaps just 4 nights in addition to the foreign holiday. So we will see what happens.
Best wishes, Pete.

Whitby and Sandsend tend to be fairly busy even out of season, but I enjoy the quieter times; lovely bright days are a bonus, but not guaranteed π Cheers, Jon.

On the Lincolnshire coast there are still very definite holiday seasons. Except for Skegness, which has a Butlin’s Holiday Camp, hen/stag parties, and all year round entertainment. We don’t stay there of course.
Best wishes, Pete.

Not quite deserted on the IOW, but more middle aged and older couples instead of kids.
