Songs I Like (70)

I liked the band Blondie from the first time I ever saw them perform one of their songs on TV. The attraction was Debbie Harry of course, who could sing really well as look gorgeous. But the musicians had a crispness about them that I liked, especially the drummer.

I bought their third album ‘Parallel Lines’ in 1978, and it was packed with great pop songs, some of which had an edge to them.

My two favourite tracks were ‘Picture This’, and ‘Hanging On The Telephone’. Both short enough to get radio airplay, they were near-perfect pop singles with that slight nod to Punk Music. But despite claims at the time, they were not a Punk band. The songs were too good, too clever, too well-constructed.

Hard to believe it was 46 years ago, and I still love those songs as much as I did then. I have chosen this one, just because it is so deliciously ‘frantic’.

The lyrics are on the video.

    1. I didn’t presume she would, but I always thought she was underrated as a singer. Those songs are quite hard to sing, and I think the band elevated the Top 20 pop song to something special.

      Best wishes, Pete.
