Following one of my recent photo posts, I was recommended to read a short story. It is called ‘The Destructors’, written by the famous novelist, Graham Greene. He wrote ‘The Third Man’, ‘Brighton Rock’, and many other well-known books. I hadn’t heard of the story, but was able to find it online, free to read.

I am thrilled to share that my short story “Henrietta’s Saving Grace” has won the 2022 Ben Nyberg contest sponsored by Choeofpleirn Press. The story was inspired one of my great-great aunts from Nova Scotia, who went by the nickname “Jen.”
I’d known early on from my mother that Aunt Jen had been a practical nurse and a closet drinker. In the final years of my mother’s life, she shared a few more choice tidbits about Aunt Jen’s life that were too good not to build a story around.

Do you ever stumble across a poem that makes you want to want to run into a crowd of people, holding it aloft and shouting, “You’ve got to read this poem!”? This is one that did it for me. (I hope I’m not violating any copyright by posting it here, but I received it in an unsolicited advertisement, so I figure it’s fair game.)
